Getting ready to switch over to a SR!

I am getting ready to switch over to a Straight Razor. I have been reading everything I can find on Razors, Shaving soap, Brushes. I am nervous about making the purchase. I was wondering if some one could tell me if this would be a good starter set for me or is this one of the lesser quality Razors I have been reading about. Please see link below. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I completely agree with moehal, do some research and choose a reputable brand. You will never EVER find a real pattern welded "Damascus" blade for $90. The material and labour involved in making one is quite expensive, often hundreds of dollars. If you buy that razor you'll end up with a fancy looking paper weight.

If you take a look at our classifieds and our approved vendors I'm sure you'll find a kit that's affordable for you. It will also bring a little peace of mind that you are getting good gear.

DON"T DO IT !! I DID !! YOU WILL LIKE SHAVING WITH A STRAIGHT ! If you don't and have something you can resell then you are not out that much. Think you may have a problem selling an old razor around here ?? :rofl2:

I agree. I bought from that sight you linked and I would advise to go a different direction. I have purchased from all vendors moehal mentioned and have yet to be disappointed. They have been some of the best buying experiences I have ever had online.

The site you posted the link to is a sure fire way to get yourself severely disappointed from what I've been told.

You're welcome. I would hate to see someone disappointed for no decent reason. You need to be given a fighting chance to make a proper go of it. If you get that, and you decide it isn't for you, then that's a fair call, but if you don't get given a fighting chance due to a poor first purchase, then that just isn't right at all. The best chance beginners can get is by buying from places that have a tried and true good record.
People here will not lead you astray intentionally. Everyone here wants the new blokes to succeed and enjoy this shared passion of ours. :)

I bought one from that site before seeing the light properly.

The best thing I did was smack it into the tap and write it off!

there you have it, advice from former customers. i dont think it gets better than that. since you are looking at a whole set up, take a look at the wet-shaving kits at straight razor designs. the basic dovo best quality set up is not much expensive than the one you posted, but it will give you a lifetime razor that comes shave ready with one free future honing, a quality strop, SRD glycerin based soap, a brush and the rest of the equipment is nice too. and if you wish you can modify it while purchasing it, the good and worthy options are endless out there :)

For what it's worth I have looked around online, and it seems that SRD has the best cost to value deal. I haven't found any other retailer selling the same quality razors at a better price. AND that's not even taking into consideration the value of Lynn/Don's honing. When I move on from my shavette to the real deal, I'll be buying from them.

I assure you that you will be pleased. They are great guys and the edge will be as sharp as it gets. Good choice.

I recently Purchased the SRD 6/8 DOVO kit and it is great Razor is as sharp as it probably can be. I am more than pleased with my purchase there.
