started to shave yesterday, everything was going good, im still getting a nick or 2, but that will change with time. so as im almost done, my wife wants to put some cologne on me and talk as im trying ATG on my neck, well, concentration was thrown off and BAM! a 1 1/2 inch slice in my throat...now i look like an idiot for a few days untill i heal up. just a heads up new guys...
We've all been there. Go slow and be patient and you'll be fine. I will say using a Straight when tired, drunk or in a rush can be very bad.
Live and learn, I now shave with the bathroom door closed and my wife knows better than to disturb me while I shave. Multi tasking is not recommended when learning to use a straight.

So let me get this straight. You're wife was trying to put cologne on you while you were still shaving? Does she also reach for the vegetables on the chopping block while you're still dicing them with the sharp kitchen knife too?! :tameshigiri::dropjaw:

I haven't been that unlucky so far in my month or so's experience. I thought I had made sure my missus knew that while I'm shaving I need to be left undisturbed, at least until I'm either extraordinarily good at it, or I give up SR shaving and go back to the previous system. My wife did sneak up on me however, stood behind me to watch. I wasn't startled, but I stopped mid-shave and said, calmly:
"Oh Hi. Can you do me a HUGE favour, it could be extremely helpful"
"Sure!"
"Grab your bag"
"Uh-huh"
"Dig around and find your phone"
"Uh-huh.... Got it"
"Now dial emergency services. Because If you spook me, I'll cut myself. Then bleed out and turn cold and blue unless they have plenty of advance notice"
I didn't actually do this of course; I'd never hear the end of it if I did, even though it would probably guarantee me distraction-free shaving, and a few night's worth of the lounge all to myself. Still, it definitely pays to ensure you don't get a big startling! It's great your wife is supportive though!
Also pay close attention to where your fingers are located from face stretching. Or you may have that 1 1/2" cut in your finger.
That depends on how deep the cut on the throat is. I mean, for the "live" part at least...Quote:

I think you brought up a very good point. In the beginning you are nervous enough you really don't need any distractions, not that you need them later either. At least later on you can handle them better because of increased confidence in what you are doing.
When I had words with my wife over distracting me while shaving she wondered what the big deal was. Seems when she was a youngster she watched her grandfather shave with a straight every morning in the kitchen with all the other normal goings on happening at the same time. I told her to bug me when I too had 40+ years experience/confidence in shaving with a straight. Makes a big difference.

Aslo dont shave in the shower, don't strop naked, don't shave after 4 red bulls. And for goodness sake give us a pic or it didn't happen.

The wife asking your opinion about makeup/clothes/shoes, the kids begging for attention while tugging at the shirttail/arms/legs, the dogs fighting underneath the feet, the weatherman saying a major storm is 30 mins away as the phone constantly rings with the carpoolers wondering what's going on....
You must learn focus, young weed-hopper.
j/k, the wife understands that shaving is "my time" and holds the chaos at bay until I'm done. :)

Situations like this have prompted my future integration of access control on my new to be shave den!
Wife's not happy about it lol but there's not allot she can do :)
I let everyone know I am shaving and to NOT make any loud noises or come "flying" into the bathroom.
I kinda like the way my face looks WITHOUT the big scar on it. :D
Too late! You should have told me this 25 years ago! I have a nice scar just under my chin that I usually keep hidden with a goatee. Kinda sucks starting out living in an efficiency apt where the bathroom is the size of a fridge. Too easy for your significant other to jostle you while shaving. Got several stitches for my troubles. Of course, the story grows with every telling. Now it's up to "So there I was, surrounded by a hundred of the most evil, foul smelling bikers that ever lived, howling for my blood in a bar so vile the Devil himself wouldn't set foot in it...." Sure beats "Yah, the Old Lady bumped my arm while shaving and had to be taken to the ER to get stitches." :)Quote:

My wife can't stand to be around when I'm shaving, just the look of the sharp blade against my face and the sound of the razor cutting.
Works well for both of us ;)
