I'd recommend that you get the razor honed by a pro rather than trying to hone it yourself. If you haven't tried a properly honed razor, you won't know what you're aiming at. Learning to shave with a less-than-sharp blade will only cause discomfort and frustration.

+1 to the advice above from Matt 69. Without having experienced a truly shave-ready blade, you won't have a benchmark by which to judge your own honing efforts.
Also, starting with a pro-honed blade will eliminate one of the many variables that all new shavers encounter when they have trouble. I.e. you won't have to worry about that factor along with the many others (face prep, angle, pressure, etc) that can explain a rough shave.
The pros really don't charge much and it's worth every penny. Please learn from my mistake. I shaved for months with a crappy edge and had a pretty miserable time of it.

Leave honing aside for now. Learn to shave. If the razor is shave ready then it would last 8-9 months if stropping is done right anyways. Spend time learning stropping rather than honing.

OK, thanks for the advice...guess I'd better source myself a shave ready blade....
May I suggest having a look at The Invisible Edge website. Good service & any straight you order from there will be shave ready. I've also heard good things about the Strop Shop but haven't personally had any dealings with them.Quote:
