Russ,

I started with a hanger but rolled the edges on my first 2 straights. Bought a paddle used that for about a month then back to the hanger. Everyone is different but the hanger got me by. As gssixgun says, do no harm and then improve the edge with the strop. Something like that but you get the idea.
For normal stroping i prefer the hanging strop, got a nice 6,5cmx65cm Juchten that works good, but for special uses just like Traveling or pushing up / polishing i only use my paddle strops / tension strop.
i also had the problem while learning to work with the strop some blades had been rolled, but now after i learned stroping the hanging strop seems just the fastest and most comfortable way for me to strop after sharpening and before shaving.
