Boar bristle opportunity...

My father is going on a boar hunt next week and I thought this could be a great opportunity for experimentation. I figure that boar = boar bristle and boar bristle = making a boar bristle brush. Unfortunately, I have no boar bristle brush making skills. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Or is anyone interested in any boar bristle for use in their brush making endeavors?

Remember, I have no idea where the bristles come from on the pig or how to procure them.

This may be more trouble than its worth but I haven't talked him into going badger hunting...yet.

Let the boar live, and just give him hugs to lather yourself. Everyone wins.

There is a whole process involved in dressing the hair, sterilizing it, cutting it, making the plug. Its pretty specialized work, not for the uninformed. Most people who make custom brushes buy the hair plug ready made to epoxy into the handle.

So i can't skin dead badgers i see at the side of the road?

Well of course you can, especially the really rare ones , the ones that are black with the white stripe down their backs. Those are the super duper silvertip.

Perfectly acceptable if they are some-one elses road kill and you can get there before Jamie Olivers mate drags the carcass off to the kitchen...

Why not gather the pelt and make a deal with a brush maker? Try, "Ah'll gev ye thes hyar piggy pelt fer'n a small whack or brushes frum 'em".

I know this is off topic, but is there something about Beavers that means their hair doesn't make good brushes? I've heard Beaver pelts are quite soft. Are Beavers protected?

Beavers are classified as rodents here in TX. They tend to be regarded as pests, but I guess there is some possibility of using their hair for brushes. I think that the problem with beaver hair is that it is greasy and repels the water you want it to hold. That's why they use it to make hats.

All this boars hair business is too much trouble. You just need a pet cat. If you tape all four paws together, you have a natural handle. Of course you either need a small kitten, or a big lathering bowl...

One suggestion however, ask the wife or kids to remove the tape from the "handle". :eek:
