I'm wondering if they actually used a brush at all :shrug::thinking::shrug::thinking:
I just tried using a wet hand and a bar of shaving soap while it wasn't as good as with a brush, it worked. Maybe tomorrow I'll try a piece of cloth. :shrug:
They certainly did Roy, and well before the 1700, as the picture below shows part of a painting from Isaack Koedijck a Dutch painter, who can clearly see the shaving brush and bowl. The painting is from 1650.

@Martin103
Do you think the brush is boar or horse?
As for the wood part I have no idea.

Martin. You my friend never cease to amaze me! How in the hell do you so quickly find all of the ancient photos, ads etc?? :thinking: :banghead:
Well I haven't got a clue about how it was done so I'm just going to be an armchair warrior and see what happens.
With that said, I do have a few friends who have horses and cattle. Maybe I'll have to see what I can come up with for a 'brush' as an experiment! :shrug:

I'd find a beautiful girl with long hair. When she wasn't looking, I'd chop off a handful, tie it in a knot and cut it to my desired length. Probably a Brunette...... I like Brunettes. :rofl2:
I don't know......Something about that brush screams wool. Cloudy shaped thing.
Harry is a thrill seeker :<0) Wakes up one morning with a brunette holding a straight razor to his neck :tameshigiri:
