Do you dump the lather from your mug or leave it for the next shave?

Guys,
I've been leaving the left over lather in my scuttle mug to 'revive' for the next shave but I'm wondering if this is how I'm supposed to do it. I squeeze out the extra lather from my brush before rinsing it but dump it into the mug. It's one topic I haven't read about yet. It does get a little stubble in it when I re-lather because I don't rinse between passes but once a week or so I will dump the lather at the end of my shave to clean it up. Am I just being cheap or is this ok? I figured I was getting the most out of the soap and I add Cremo for extra glide every couple of days. Sorry if this is posted in the wrong "spot".

I believe some members of the forum do as you do without the Cremo, the frugal ones that is. :D Can't see what harm it would do.

I generally make enough lather to cover three full passes, squeezing what is left in the brush onto my hand for touch-up. After that, I rinse my brush thoroughly. Even when I bowl lathered, I preferred to clean my bowl and start with fresh lather the next morning. I can understand being frugal, but squeezing the lather from the brush, with all the stubble in it, and saving it for the next shave is going overboard. Then again, to each his own.

I wash my brush out thoroughly. As for the shaving mug I just put it on its stand to dry. As far as I can see its like putting a wet bar of soap in the soap dish. Never had a problem.

Rinse the mug & brush out each time, fresh soap & brush each time. My soap pucks last plenty long,,,,,

I usually run an uber lather concoction for about a week the dump it and start again. But the brush is washed and air dried eveyday.

I put it on my bagel.

I used to leave the excess lather on top of the soap to help keep the soap puck better hydrated for the next days shave.
Now I just leave whatever lather happens to be left in the bowl right where it is and then use another slightly larger bowl as a cover to prevent drying of the puck.
My badger brush holds evough lather for how ever many passes I might want to make and then some. I don't have any need to go back to the puck for more lather so the puck never gets contaminated with used lather and stubble.
This is the best and easiest method that I have found.
Starting with a soap puck that has some residual moisture in it lathers up really fast. I usually count about fifty fast swirls and the brush is loaded with enough lather for the entire shave.
When done I always squeeze out the extra lather from the brush, rinse it thoroughly. and flick out most of the water and then dry it out a bit on a hand towel untill the bristls are frizzy and hang it.

Ya mean ya actually wash the lather out of the brush ??? :gaah: ............... :rofl2:

Kidding aside ...... fresh lather for me each and every time. :)

I have taken to squeezing my brush out into my hand and palming it into the scuttle. Different lather each shave for 4 shaves. I have a plastic lid which sits on top. Pretty good stuff as you toss in a bit of water and whip it up. MDC, Proraso, Trumper's limes, Razorock and whathaveyou all together. Always is great lather, A different experience. Wash the brush and dry each shave.
Not about frugal, just having fun with it. After the 'potpourri' shave, I wash everything good and do it again!

Well, I face lather so there is not much of a lather on top of the puck after loading the brush. When finished the brush gets a thorough rinse, a couple of shakes and is hung to dry. The puck is covered and put away. I am at the age age stage where wasting a bit of soap matters not. Each to there own.

I rinse my lather off completely and start fresh the next time. Afterall I don't save my table scraps to eat the next day.

Talking about this, I had an old barber once who used the disposable blade Weck to go around the ears and the neck.
After the first time, he shook so much, I requested clippers.
As old glen passed away, I bought a bunch of old stuff from his daughter from the barber shop. I found his mug and bought it.
Never washed it, just sits on my shelf at the shop. Talk about frugal!

Introduced a good old friend to DE shaving, and he was doing exactly that, saving the lather and not even rinsing the brush. I was a bit horrified, but then remembered it was only a cheap horse hair brush that I had given him anyway. He is funny like that, tighter than a fishes bunghole, and that is water tight.

I remeber grandpa always had a cup of lather in the bathroom. I rinse it down the drain everyday

Yeah....fresh lather for me....but I have never tried to reuse so I can't knock it. Maybe I will try it sometime.

I have enough soaps and creams to last longer than I will, so I wash everything out, but then I'm now a face lather, so what's in the mug is just residue from resting the brush in it while I shave. I'm with BobH on this one!

I see the issue, but I just use brush-wringings. I had not thought of it until a recent thread, but, as I tend to face-lather all the time as well these days, I had to put the nice scuttle to use somehow. It is fun. What can I say? :D

But I'm rather particular about how I take care of my thing's and how they're kept, so I stopped doing that because all my shaving items set out in plain site. Definitely think it's worth doing, if your trying to be frugal. Now you have me thinking about getting another container to save my lather! DAMIT! I'll never get through all my soaps....

Therein lies the problem! :)

I face lather, and yes, I like to leave the unshaven lather on my face until the next shave. Saves money and time; I can't remember the last time I had to buy after-shave!

I do rinse and hang the brush though. Obviously.

The same.
Each shaving is different,i clean my equipment and never left anything behind except the blade in the razor if it's new
Everything goes to his place.

Dump it...It's soap...Make sure you wipe off your razor though..

When I started I thought the soap was supposed to stay in the bowl, so that is what I did. I lather in the bowl on the top of the soap. I set the brush in the bowl and the bowl in the hot water while I shave. When finished I dry the bottom of the outside of the bowl, but I leave whatever was inside for the next day. Then I rinse the brush and set it bristle side up to dry. I like this very well. I get a thick lather that stays warm from Van der Hagen in seconds, and I have plenty for an OCD shave. Still going strong after four weeks on 3.5 oz. puck.

To my mind this was similar to a guy I read who melts his soap in the bowl inside a microwave and uses it in a similar way. I just let the water do the melting in its own time. Since it air dries daily and gets refreshed daily, I am not concerned with anything growing in it.

Thanks for the response guys. After this past weekend's meet up in Seattle, I've been bitten harder by the "bug". I received a couple of items at the meet and now I feel it really kicking in. Last night I HAD TO BUY, just had to, I don't know what took over but the next thing I know another order for blade samples then col conks sample pack of soaps only to be followed by another order for Nomad shave soap. Why, well because I wanted another soap with a wooden bowl! My hair won't grow fast enough to "require" another shave so I shop instead....... my employer provides a phone number for "employee assistance program" or EAP but no one has listed the help number on SRP. It's an upward spiral, lost in the silky lightness of the next lather.

I know, you all warned me:D

I squeeze excess lather out to reuse and wash & dry the brush. Plenty of different soaps but i figure why waste?

I worked for almost 60 years so I could enjoy the good things in life when I retired such as a nice fresh lather with a different crème or soap everyday. And a different razor each day also. I think I have earned it. I have no problem with someone who saves it however, to each his own

I found a small dessert bowl ? At Walmart it fits on top of my srd mug and acts like a cheap scuttle to keep my lather warm. I have grated up Michaels woolfat soap in it. And i fill the srd cup up about 3/4 full of the hottest water available from the tap.I face lather for the most part.(second pass and touch up more so ) I don't get stubble in the bowl, however I do get a stray badger hair or two occasionally, but I dig those out. When I'm done I just leave the bowl to dry out without rinsing. The brush of course gets rinsed wrung and hung.

Finally another "let it dry in the bowl" brother!

Mwf is my most expensive soap so far. I just keep reminding myself that it's soap and more than likely it kills germs and bacteria

I never save the lather. I start fresh everytime. Lather is to inexpensive to reuse. To each his own.

I do not see it as saving lather. If you just let it all dry in the bowl, it is the same result as if you dried the soap in a dish. Every morning I have a clean bowl with a puck of soap in it. The lather just disappears... I do not have a soap collection either though.

I'm finding that my habits changed a bit when I started ordering sample packs. I still leave the lather in the mug, the lather falls and soap dries for the next day. I do dump it every three or four shaves to get rid of any stubble that finds its way into the mug, (that's a change). My internal battle is....... I'm basically cheap so I try to wring out as much as possible BUT I can't wait to try the next soap! So I am dumping it more frequently.
Next dilemma, what to do with the "stuff" that I collect that I don't like. Good example is the "almond" col conk sample. It is way toooo sweet for me and can't stand it but "cheap" me won't throw it away. Should we form a trade group? Or is there already one rolling?

I clean and dump after every shave, and I do believe I still haven't finished any of the creams I bought since 2005. I know I've barely started making a dent in the pucks.

Fresh lather every time with different software. It is a part of this beautiful ritual.

Waste not, want not.

The soaps that I do not like, for any reason, become my pre-lather cleanser and softener.

Wet thoroughly, apply the unlikened soap. Let sit while doing other things.
Rinse off, and apply the good soap.

Works for me. But, if you are experiencing a type of allergic reaction then get rid of it or give it to someone who can use the product.
