I am addicted to my Simpsons 55.
Obie,
I spent more money on brushes than any rational person should. I had Plissons, Simpsons, TGN, Thäters, etc... To answer your question, I sold off all of my considerable collection and kept the Rooney and Thäters. I'm not sure if they still make the Rooney's Finest. If so, that's the one brush I recommend if money is no object... If it is, then, then Thäter is clearly the choice for *me*. I like the little bit of scritchiness from the Rooney, but the Thäter is probably softer tipped with just as much backbone and throughput. So, yeah, I kinda cheated with my two answers, but there you have it
My Vintage Plisson. Love this brush, makes lather from creams, hard and soft soaps but may take a back seat when I get done my Walrus ivory handle, 27mm Super Simpson knot.

I,luckily, have not had tospend hundreds or thousands of pesoson finding a great shaving brush. I've tried A vinatge grey Plisson (which I still have and use for travel because it's so nifty and small) which is slightly rough on my delicate features. I had a New Forest 'two-band' which was quite nice, but I had a Thäter 41925/0 which was softer, so I gave it to a friend, who's been quite satisfied with it. I still have a vintage Certifyd barber brush in boar, which I still useon occasion and greatly enjoy.
Then I got my grubby paws on a Thäter 41925/1 fan in two-band and now I rarely use anything else. I'd like to try a Thäter one or two sizes bigger (26-28mm fan or 28-30mm bulb) in two band, as I'm a messy shaver and manage to get lather to deep into my brush, necessitating cleaning on a bi-weekly basis.
So for now I'll say Thäter two-band.
I've stuck to badger and synthetic after giving boar and horsehair a fair shake. I've also noticed that all of my knots, natural hair or otherwise, are German.
I prefer a smaller brush in the 24mm range, in badger hair with tips as soft as possible, but with enough backbone to load from a puck. If I could keep but one of my brushes, it would probably be this :

I have a few brushes in the mail so this choice isn't written in stone. Nonetheless, my inbound silvertips will have a hell of a time trying to dethrone the 49125.
