Hello everyone
So I'm new to this what is the difference between boar and badger? And what is the difference in sizes?
I need this broken down Barney style lol
Atm I have a little badger brush it's small and nuthing special and I just ordered a boar to try but what is the actual differences?
Man this is as complicated as what soap, some like badgers some like boar , your just going to have to try them to find out which you like , myself I've tryed 4 boars and I just don't like them. But those who do don't like badgers as much. Size is another subjective thing ,, I've tryed from 32 mm to 20mm I settled on 24-26 with a low loft 48-50 mm I like face lathering and I like backbone , so try as many as you can or just stay out of this rabbit hole and just use what you get till it falls apart They all make the lather. That's what I figured i oredered a boar and have a badger but was just trying to see if there was a known difrence but like everything else with this type of shaving preferences seem to be the answer lol
I have a couple of badgers and a Semogue boar brush. Some work better with particular soaps or creams than others. For me, the boar works beautifully for Mitchell's Wool Fat soap, whereas the badger brushes are too soft to really make a great lather. But Taylor of Old Bond Street goes wonderfully with my softest badger brush from Baxter of California.
In my experience the biggest differences are:
1) Boar bristles tend to be stiffer than badger.
2) Badger brushes tend to hold more water and require less soaking before use than boar brushes.
Bottom line: in my collection, each type of brush has its place and is well-loved.

Badgers hold heat and moisture better than boar. Boar do very nice in hard soap and take some breaking in to make soft. Both make lather. Don't stop at boar and badger, there is horse, synthetic and combos as well.
It, like so much else in life, is a preference thing.
I prefer badger but will use a boar on occasion.
Ohh was not aware of mixed brushes I will have to look into that
First, did you check the first 2 posts in this forum? it may answer some of your questions.
What you are asking here is kind of like saying what's better a gas or diesel powered car and what brands should I look at.
Your questions have all been answered many times so do a search and you will be rewarded. You will also learn way more than having a few guys give their opinion in one thread.
I know that what I ask is a little redundant but I need some were to start I read some of the first sticky post and was more confused by all the information that not while some of it helped a lot, most of it was very specific and went over my head ....
And I have managed to learn most of what I needed to start from this thread ....the very basics is what I needed
Thebigspendur gave you great advice. The only way to truly find your preference is to try several different brushes and decide which you prefer.
And I agree I have to try different things and make my own opinions....I just had no were to start from. And now I do .... I found a starting grounds and that's what I wanted
it's not that I ignored him ....I read the sticky threads and while some of it helped like I said ...most of it I have no idea what it's talking about because it a very specific information about specific brushes or traites of brushes that I don't know anything about
I am not trying to ignore or disrespect anyone here but you cannot learn to run if you cannot walk first....
Ok I'll try to narrow it down,, do you like to face lather or bowl? Do you like backbone? I mean do you like it a little stiff? Or do you like it floppy ? Also how about do you lather up , do you swirl it around aggressively? Or paint it on?? It really doesn't matter what soaps or creams you use , once you learn your brush and lather ability you can lather with either,, now answer these questions and I think we can help you at least have a starting point ,, I didn't know this till my brush maker asked me how I lather up , then he got me in the brush I wanted. Ok I prefer a bowl, and some flop but not to much (I ordered a cheap boar to see how I like it currently I have a cheap badger---and I mean like $6 cheap lol ) and I think I paint it on
Ok that's something to go with, get you a decent badger with a 26mm knot at about 52-54 and make sure it's a silvertip, this will be a bit floppy and soft and with you painting it will work great your not looking to scrub the most face latherers do. Now if you go with a boar at least get a good one so it will have a dense knot, now I do not know which ones are good I've bought them just never liked them, also a really nice synthetic will be floppy too , I did try a Simpson chubby 2 syntheticand it's a little too soft fir me.,, I face lather and really screw it around on my face, and the knits I like are the two band 24mm set at 48-50 mm. Now I have a couple that are 28mm ans one 32mm and their set pretty high and are the super silvertip,, they are fun and lather hogs but they are soft and floppy m, good for painting on. Hope this helps. You should be able to get something in the 50 dollar range to start and try from there. Tc
I need to amend this , you will have to spend 70-80 to get into a silvertip even in the more inexpensive brands ,, I haven't bought a brush from anyone other than the custom guys here, and one Simpson and it wasn't cheap. Sorry but that will suit your needs and if you get a good one it'll last , you can also just hook up with one of the brush makers and get just how you like. Tc

And wow are they different !!
I do have to addmit for the hard bald frog soap I have the boar brush makes it a bit easyer to lather up and while I prefer the softer badger brush I don't mind the stiffer boar ither ......
I think I may need to try a stiffer badger brush.....
I think I may be addicted...........lol
Guidry that boar brush is decent and you will like it better a few weeks from now with regular use I assure you.
What do you tink about a synthetisch brush. Great performers those brushes.
Guidry, +1 for continued use of the new boar brush until it is broken in. The tips will get softer while retaining the backbone.

Also I read some were ...something about washing the brush with conditioner or something to soften it up a bit ....any thoughts on this?
Its a good idea to wash your brush from time to time with regular hair shampoo, this will get any dried lather and mineral build up from the base of the brush, rinse well with warm water. As a rule do not use very hot water on brushes, you risk loosening the glue and it may loose hairs. Hair softening in the case of boar brushes comes from split ends created at the tips due to mechanical abrasion with your bowl or face, this is desirable for boars and is a normal part of break in. Conditioners claim to repair split ends and may inhibit this process so it might be counter productive. As far as badger brushes are concerned there are some very talented brush makers in this lovely land of wet shaving that might provide some excellent advice on their care. Just to comment on synthetics, I only have one old synthetic brush that I cant say I'm too fond of but I understand currently synthetic brushes have improved greatly and will give naturals a run for their money.
