Yeah its funny, I have never had a problem getting modern williams to lather so i guess im lucky about that and thanks for the input about not using excessive force. I dont press down hard when i whip up lather i just swirl. To be honest i actually used one of the metal bowls made for shaving and pressed some slivers into the bottom of the bowl and then gradually added water while whipping and BOOM !!!!!!!Lather!!!!!!

For once, I have to disagree with Bob’s comment (“If you were able to lather new Williams you are doing well”), as you may have solved one problem by acquiring another (shedding hairs).

I have about 6 Shavemac brushes, and not only do I find it easy to build consistently good lather with them, they are also my brushes least likely to shed hairs.
That is why I prefer Shavemac over some other brands: Shavemacs work exceedingly well and withstand the rigors of daily use.

Your technique appears to need development, because if you can get a Shavemac to shed hairs your approach to making lather is likely to be heavy-handed.
I can say that because it is so rare to read posts about Shavemacs shedding hairs.

There is plenty of audio-visual (e.g. YouTube) information out there how to use a shaving brush.
Some of it us helpful and some of it is unfortunately rubbish, but watching several videos you should soon develop a feel for what techniques shavers agree on and which ones are tried and trusted.

There are also significantly better shaving soaps out there (that don’t break the bank) than the one you mentioned.

    Good luck.

Thanks. I mentioned multiple soaps it was just the williams that i finally got to lather.. I will continue to try the other soaps and more until i get it with all of them. I just hope the brush stops shedding. I have contacted shavemac about the shedding issue also and am awaiting a reply ATM.

Exactly the point I was trying to make about Williams being very difficult to lather and others much better for not a lot more. I was assuming that be being heavy handed on the Williams to get it to lather lead to the shedding problem. Yup, Shavemac brushes are not know to be shedders, the two of mine are not. I also posted a lathering tutorial that I found helped me quite a bit while others, as you say, are rubbish. So, we are really in full agreement on all counts but I could have worded it more clearly.

Out of curiosity, what size is the knot? It may be that it is larger and denser than you are used to, with your other brush and that might be contributing to you not getting enough soap onto the brush while loading.

As the others have mentioned, Shavemac knots are exemplary and, possibly, the best knots available. At present, I have five Shavemac 2-Band knots, three D01's, one Unique, and one Silvertip, and I have also tried five others during the past nine years of shaving and I have never seen any of the brushes shed a hair.

    Good luck.
