advice on my next brush purchase

OK, Ive got two decent badger brushes, one an old (at least 20 years) Simpson I got from my old man and the other a brand I'm not sure of that I got from EM's place (horn handle/silver tip) that I paid about $100 for. Both are great, but not GREAT.. but seem to lack in size/heft and the density seems anemic compared to my barbor's brush, a Chubby 2 that he bought a few years back. So I'm thinking of getting my own Chubby.. but I wanted opinions on whether I should just spend a bit more and get the 3? I do prefer heft I think, and a thick/dense knoted brush feels better to me than thinner or less dense. I'm looking at the Super hair model as I love the feel of the soft hair on my face.

What are your thoughts on getting such a large brush? Is it worth the $60-70 more than the 2? I'm not so much trying to save the money as I'm trying to see if indeed a large brush is a minus in some respect.

I'm a normal build guy at 6'1 and 200lbs, so I'm neither very large or small faced.

I have the chubby 3 in super and its a fantastic brush. It has the densest badger knot I've ever seen and its not really that big a brush. Its a great brush for soaps and creams. Highly recommended. I know some find the wide short handle harder to use but I like it.

Sounds great! I have read of some "quality" issues on recent batches.. is there a way (serial #, or date of production) to know about in order to avoid those?

Make sure you buy from a reputable vendor, either Em's Place of LeesRazors. If there are issues, they will take care of you.

i have a chubby 3 in best! its an awesome brush and works well with creams! the size of the brush depends entirely on your preferences. i personally think that a large brush looks, works and feels better than a small one!! plus i have a large head and face :) :) if its soft and lofty you're after i might suggest u have a look at the Kent brushes!

Brushes don't have any serial numbers on them however I have mine about a year now and haven't had any shedding issues. it seems that was mainly going back over 18 months ago. At any rate good recommendation to buy from someone who is very reliable. if there is a problem they will take care of it pronto.

I have a Simpsons chubby 2 and H4. I like the chubby but i find it heavy and large in the hand. I use it when i want really luxurious lather and have the time to build it. I don't like it for soaps. I use the H4 for soaps but it is smaller. I don't think I would go for larger than the chubby 3 but that is me.the 2 is as big as I want.

I find I love small brushes (knots up to 23mm most) but there are many who espouse "bigger brushes for better living" :D

One thing - the Super is not the softest tips you can get, supposedly. Actually, most people would say it's a bit scritchy, iirc

It would be nice if you can check Best and Super in person :shrug:

The Chubby 3 is an Awesome brush. I would high recommend it. Especially if you prefer some heft. The brush knot is as dense as they come and they work wonders with soaps. I say go for it. :tu

BTW regarding the recent quality control issues. I have to say that Simpson has taken care of those problems. I recently (1month ago) purchased a PL10 and it has not shed a single hair.

Placed my order from EM's place today... I can't wait for it to come now. My other purchased brush, a horn handle "silver tip" brush I bought from EM's place also is nice, but it's a bit smallish for me, and I find the density of the knot to be a bit weak, especially when wet, and especially in comparison to my dad's hand me down Simpson.

BTW.. does Simpsons have a website?

Wanted to update the thread on my purchase. the Chubby 3 came on Friday and I used it both Sat and today, and BOY what an amazing brush. The difference in the performance of this brush and my Gold-Dachs Silvertip are considerable. While the smaller Gold-Dachs is easier to get the small places, like over my mouth, the Chubby 3 holds a serious lather and covers my face in a thick white coat of foam so thick I can't see my stubble thru it. Very happy with the performance of the tighter knot. I've now decided to get a Rooney and compare the two.. I'm hoping to create a rotation between two or three high quality brushes.

I have been looking at my brush lately and thinking I need to get a good one. The one I have is a badger hair brush, and it works...ok I guess. I looked up some of the brushes you guys were talking about... $300.00 + on a brush??? Are you serious?? Does it make that much of a difference? I dont even have a fraction of the razors I want yet, let alone a $300 brush. At this rate, I'm going to have to wait until I retire to buy one of those things, and then I wont be able to afford it. Someone is going to have to provide some awfully compelling evidence that these things are worth their salt. :confused:

I have to agree with you Shaun, some of this has to be a status thing. I have been using my cheap old brush forever and it still performs again and again. Ok so I lose a hair now and then, but $300 that's like investment or rent type of money. Maybe if I tried one I would see, but right now for me, this just seems a waste of good money.

About 3 years ago I bought a $100 silver tip badger brush because I heard they were better than the best badger brush and the boar brush I had been using for the past 10 to 12 years! I have to admit that my silver tipped badger has a luxurious feel to it but recently my father bought me a $30 best badger brush and I find this to be my favored brush!

I'm new to using a brush, but I can certain tell the difference between my cheaper one and my nicer one.. is it 3 to 10 times better? no.. But that's the same with everything... the "you get what you pay for" curve gets very shallow as price goes up.. With all that said, if I can afford it, I get it that's how I buy everything I own.

I'm sure that the members on this thread who have these higher end brushes own them because they like them, and if they weren't worth the money the free market would end their production as there would be no buyers.
