Kentucky-made Moss-type Scuttles

A few months ago, I gave a photocopied article of the Moss Scuttle to one of the men I go to church with. Since he is retired, and does pottery as a hobby and as a ministry, I told him that I thought that he could possibly augment his income by selling scuttles through the internet shaving community. We discussed the purpose of scuttles, generally what size they would need to be, and what colors might be best.

Last Sunday I received these three beautiful scuttles:








(I have included my Burma-shave boar brush to better determine the size of the scuttles.)

The smallest one is black with a really neat smoky gray sheen, the middle one is finished in what I consider an antique gold wash, and the largest is in black with gray and brown undertones. I have used the largest and am very pleased with it.

To prep the scuttle, I fill the bottom and top with the very hot tap water before my shower. After my shower, I pour out the water and refill the top and bottom. When I am ready to start shaving, I pour out the water and refill only the bottom.

For the first shave with the scuttle, I squeezed some Kiss My Face - Lavender and Shea shaving cream in the scuttle and whipped it up with my wet brush. The lather stayed warm through two passes and almost through the third one.

For the second shave, I loaded my wet brush with Proraso shaving soap (green disk container) and whipped up the lather in the scuttle. I did add a few drops of hot water and re-whipped the lather between passes. Again, I had two, almost three, warm lather passes.

The third shave, I loaded my wet brush with The Gentlemen's Quarter - Desert Ironwood shaving soap and whipped up some serious lather in the scuttle. Wow! This was the most lather I have ever gotten from this soap. I did add a few drops of hot water between passes and re-whipped the lather. Again, I had two, almost three, warm lather passes.

I am really happy with my scuttles, but don't see needing all three. Any thoughts on how to handle the excess scuttles, and what the possible prices these scuttles may be sold for?

I am assuming that the upper and lower portions of the scuttle can separate and that they are not attached?

I would say between $40 and $50 would be a fair price.

Actually, they are attached.

The guy who made the scuttles and I discussed whether the upper portion of the scuttle should be detachable, or not. We decided that heat retention of the scuttle would be better if the top and bottom portions were attached.

Very nice. When I read they were Kentucky-made, I thought that maybe Bybee had gotten into the scuttle business. My mother is from KY (Clinton County), and I still have a lot of family there.

Can you tell me if the scuttles are earthenware or stoneware?

I think it would be more aesthetic if future scuttles looked continuous where it looks like the two come together. That is without a ridge where they appear connected. I'm not doing a good job today at spitting out my words, I'll stop here. Nice scuttles.
