Well the subject title says it all I guess.
I'm looking for a good brush. Willing to pay up to $130 AUD (give or take). Don't nessecarily have to spend that amount, just want to get the best brush possible within that price range I guess.
Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
My wife got me a medium Rooney Silvertip for Christmas from Classic Shaving and I love it. According to my calculations, 130AUD is about 90USD. There are some nice small and medium Rooney Silvertips for 90USD or less at CS. Straight Razor Designs has some Stephen's Woodworking Silvertips in your price range. I don't have first hand knowledge about these brushes, but I noticed that there is a review on them on the login home page. Give it a read.
My first brush was a small pure badger, which I've used for over 30 yrs. A silvertip is in your price range, so go to go and get a silvertip.

I am sure that there are a bunch of brushes in that price range that are superior but Crabtree and Evelyn sales the small super badger brush (130271) manufactured by Edwin Jagger for $35 (now on sale for $28). Many people like this brush, and if you consider the difference in price, it may be the best value for a brush.

I can vouch for Stephen's Woodworking Brushes from Straight Razor Designs. Absolutely wonderful performance!!
There are plenty of good brushes around: personally I like the Kent, Edwin Jagger, Vulfix and Rooney; and the wife offered me as Xmas present a Stephen's Woodworking Brush... they are all excellent brushes, different in softness or stiffness of tips, but all of them of excellent quality; for instance the Vulfix is a very soft brush, the Rooney a stiffer one... your choice.
One word - Shavemac. Love mine.

Although, those Stephen's Woodworking brushes look tempting.

Thanks for the help everyone, I ended up spending a little more and going with a Shavemac.

Following that link it's the brush on the right in the first two photos, with the brown/horn coloured handle and clear on the bottom.
It's even more beautiful in person, I love it. I glad I splurged.
My only regret is I should have got the Shavemac logo facing the right way when the brush is hanging in it's stand, as that's how it spends most of it's life. Oh well not a big deal.
The Shavemac people were great. I ordered it from their website on Friday, and the brush and stand arrived on Tuesday. I was amazed it only took three business days to arrive all the way in Australia.
As far as working up a lather it is great, did it quickly, easily and produced a lather of good quality.

Onto a quick question.
When I used it, and cleaned it and left it to dry, some of the hairs were sticking out alot and not really falling with the rest of the brush. Kind of like an art brush that's been stabbed. I was careful not to misuse the brush. As the brush dried that hairs settled. Although there are still a handful sticking our slightly, not too much, just not as neat as when it first arrived. I'm probably being neurotic, but I just want to make sure this is normal and/or okay. So is it?
Also, how do you go about cleaning the lather/soap/cream after using. Do you just run it under the tap, or do you work the brush with you hand, or anything else?

After a few uses it should fully bloom and be beautiful. After I use mine, I shake it out good, let it dry, then run my hand over it to fluff it up. Always looks sharp! Nice choice BTW!
Thanks, after doing what you said, it seems to look normal again.
So when cleaning the brush, it's just holding it under running water? Or do you work your fingers through the bristles?
That's all I do, hold it under on its side and upright. If it's still well loaded I give it a gentle squeeze before or during. Seems to do the trick.Quote:
