We haven't had many conversations about brushes yet. I am really liking the Vulfix 40 that I have. It's a thick brush and really holds lather well. I also have a longer Vulfix for my deeper mugs. Big difference between the better badger hairs and bigger difference than the Boars hair as well. What are you guys using and what have you tried? Lynn

I'm still in the market for a Simpson's Badger and a Kent Bristle but haven't found anything yet.
I generally use the badger brushes for creams and the bristle brushes for soaps.

If truth be told there's probably not a lot to tell one from the other; apart from the size that is. I like them all but if I had to choose I'd say the Kent BK8 for creams and the Omega 48 Professional for soap.
I only own one brush, a Vulvix 40 as well. Initially, it was a bit large for my taste, but I am growing into it. I think I could also paint the side of my house with it quite comfortably due to its size, but luxurious it is in spades!
This is a great topic and pretty much the "great unknown" to me. My first cheap bristle brushes worked great. They took soap and they would apply it to my face. What more could anyone ask?
Then I got a Tweezerman badger and a couple of vintage badger brushes including one really beautiful very soft badger brush that my wife immediately pilefered for display. The Tweezerman became my regular shave brush and there is no comparison to me. If anything, it holds too much water and I have to shake it lightly a couple times to keep from flooding my neck and chest with soapy water as I lather up. It froths up soap extremely well.
So yesterday my Tweezerman came unglued and the knot came out of it's recess. It's still in one piece and I need only glue it back in for it to be ready to go but I'm considering this a good opportunity to buy something much nicer if spending 5 or 6 times as much buys a brush that's noticably better. I am not interested right now in going for the huge big buck stuff that's way past the point of diminishing returns, but I would like to scoop up all the quality possible without going over the top.

I have used a cheap boar brush that I cot at CVS and a badger form Col. Conk. ( not that expensive) The boar has been relegated to my kids for painting. The badger I have now is great.
I use Vulfix #2198 Pure Badger Shaving Brush, and i must say, what a diference. For better that is, from my 2$ boar spanish brush. It is much softer, meaning i have to work a bit longer, but it pays off (i use classic brand soap). The feeling is incredible. I think that the silvertip and best badger would be too soft for my beard.
I am looking to buy a Jaguar boar brush i saw at the market, it has very large knot, and i want something that will build lather quick when i need.

I use a boar's hair brush that I bought at Walgreen's. Works just fine for me.
I never tried anything that wasn't badger hair so I can't compare. My first brush was the MenEssentials Pure Badger Brush, right now I use a Vulfix. I am lusting after a Plisson... only I don't have $700 to drop at this point.

I use a Tweezerman badger. It works good for me. I'm thinking about upgrading to a Vulfix 374 super badger. But I'm wondering if it going to give me a better lather. By the way, I'm new here. You guy seem like a great bunch, and I've learned a lot haning out here and at yahoo. I've yet to have my first SR shave. I'm looking forward to it. I'm sure it will go smooth. Tim

I just got a minty Simpson Super Badger in the 120mm size off Ebay and tried it out today for the first time. The Tweezerman worked pretty well but there's no comparison. This is much more dense, softer and holds water like a sponge. Best $30.00 I ever spent.
My large Vulfix super Badger I got from Ray's shop is among my favorite. When dry and fluffed up, the breech is so large it covers most of my cheek. At first I wondered how I'd be able to use the massive brush; now, having used it, I can't imagine otherwise. The brush has exceptional water and lather holding properties. Once I've lathered up, I never need to lather up in the mug again. For a second pass, I just need to dab the tip of the brush in a bit of warm water.

I agree with you 100%. I think I spent $30 on my badger brush and while I don't know what number it is or for that matter what size it is It works just fine. All I know is that for $700 you had better get a nude woman to shave you and use it. :lol:
Go over to the MSN Wetshavers forums, there are actully guys over that own them. With those though your are paying for rare bager hair and a horn handle, expensive stuff. I would like to own this stuff but sadly their are things in life as of right now that require my money; car, book collection, electronics, dates with girlfriend...
For several months I have been using a brush I bought from Caswell Massey. It is simply an outstanding badger brush and I believe it is even better than the Vulfix #40 Super Badger Shaving Brush that I just received from Classic Shaving. I own both and the Caswell M seems to have more bristles. Both are 30mm knots. Don't understand since the Caswell Massey was only $99 and the Vulfix was $50 more. Interesting.

I'm currently using a Saville Row brush that I got from qedusa.com. It works great, and I got a size bigger than I paid for because they were out of stock. I've found that it holds lots of water, and it lathers up quite well too. I'm not sure about what you all mean by keeping lather for your whole face, but I typically dip it back in a the bowl a couple of times (of course that's also so that lather going on my face stays warm). Over all, I like it a lot, and the price was great, only about $55-$60 bucks.

I've got a big Kent T12 and a much smaller Kent BK4.
Kent say there silver badger is best. The BK4 is silver badger.
The T12 however uses the cheepest badger they use. I honestly can not tell the difference. They are both good brushes. The big brush is a dream to use but its a waste of soap. So I use the smaller brush. Maybe that makes me a cheapskate.
I use a few ....my favorite is a Best Badger that I bought from Emily over at EmsPlace.com. She also has a wonderful page detailing the differences and properties between the types of Badger hair.
I use a $6.00 Surrey Boar brush I bought in Walgreen's for travelling, and it is fine. I plan to buy a Tweezerman Badger shortly to replace the Surrey.
The brush DOES make a difference!

I use a Burma shave boar brush on occasion, But the Vulfix superbadger I love so much.
While I agre the brush does make a difference it still does not mean one is ultimately better than the other for everyone. I have a Burma Shave Bristle, a Tweezerman Badger and 2 different expensive Crabtree & Evelyn badger from when that company was into shaving stuff. The C&E badgers are very nice, the Tweezerman is fine but I still grab the Burma Shave bristle 8 out of 10 times. I gues I just like the stiff feel better when lathering up.

i have three. i have a simpson persian jar 1 in best badger i use for travel. it is small and it has the hardest bristles of my three. if it had not been for the fact that it was a simpsons, i would not have gotten it.
i have a kent bk8. gentlemens shop in england has the best price. large knot, great handle and suppossedly silver tip. no complaints, wonderful
i just have had for about 10 days now the group ShaveMyFace brush made for us by shavemac. cocobola wooden handles, engraved, with 26 mm knot. very tall bristles. and it is true silvertip. the bristles when held next to the kent are very much whiter/more silver. i have to learn the correct water ratios but it has a sucking feeling when you swirl the cream or soap on your face. a bargain at $109.00

I have a few boar bristle brushes (Surrey, etc) that I take travelling, and a nice Best Badger (about $60) I bought a while back as my daily brush. I am thinking of picking-up a couple of Tweezerman brushes for travelling, and maybe a Vulfix to complement my daily badger brush.
I find that badger works best, but seriously doubt that a brush 3 - 5 X more expensive than mine would produce tabgible benefits during the shave.
For me, good, long beard preparation is the key, coupled with good shaving soap. I use the Cremo Creme now as an "underlayer" for pre-shave, and putting the Classic Shaving, or any other soap over the top of it works wonders - regardless of the applicator (brush)!

Has any of you ever worked with the Wilkinson Sword pure Badger brush?
I can get it here (local chemist's) for about $27 tax incl.
I just cannot find any information on them (think they are/have discontinuing/ed this item.

The Wilkinson Sword brushes are readily available in most mainstream supermarkets in the UK. I've used one in the past, haven't got one now though.

In the Uk, I believe you, overhere in Holland it is a different story, but if you say they work fine I'm getting one (and save $50), novice as I am.

I've got a large 30mm knot/80mm loft super badger brush I had made with a bocote wood handle. (There's picture of it in my gallery with other brushes, I've had made and sold - no I do not have any to sell at this time and I don't know when I'll have more made) I use this brush for the shaves that I take my time on and enjoy. I've also got an old Surry brush that I've used for years. I use this one for quick shaves.
I've also picked up a Burma shave brush just to try. I figured for $4 I'm not loosing much if I don't like it. Well I don't like it. It's wimpy compared to the Surry, and not luxurous at all compared to the badger.
I'm also thinking about the badger/boar blended brush that Em's Place has. I figure that might make a decent travel brush.

I have a Muhel Pinsel (sp?) badger brush with a black horn handle. A mid priced brush (around $65 I think) but for a first brush something of a luxury. I'm glad I got a nicer brush as it lathers and feels wonderful.
