Handmade Brush, (boar this time) in Walnut

Hey everybody... still working on brushes

This one was made using a 28mm boar knot this time (by special request), again in my absolute favorite--Claro Walnut!

I hand shaped this from one block of walnut, and finished it with satin poly.
So far, none of my brushes have been the same design, and this one certainly is unique..


Here are some pics (the brush stands on end, but I have it laying down b/c I was having a hard time getting the color right without putting it on this white cloth... this was the easiest way- I suck at photoshop).
I'll include some "in hand" pics soon, but I'd like to know what you think.

First, I drew up the design and overlaid it on the wood in order to pic the best piece for grain and figure.

The where is your mind at comment was meant to be a light hearted jab Ecosse. I should've used a different set of smilies such as these:;):D, but your comment did catch my attention because the shape of the brush is so obviously female!

Well, I am not trying to go into business, but I am willing to make brushes for people if there is something that someone wants, and they think my style matches their tastes. I don't use a lathe and I like to try out new designs. So, the designs may not be for everyone. That being said, I make these because I have lots of fun in the shop while I'm making them.

I may start selling these one day, but generally I don't mind making a brush every now and then for someone (and I am only really concerned with covering my actual costs) because it's fun for me.

That's cool Dave. I just really like the designs as you obviously think out of the box. I also think its good that something you really enjoy doing is quite admired by others. Keep up the great work.

I am always pleased when someone feels the need to make some pointless sideways insult when asked for an impression of a piece of handiwork. Here is a perfect example of just that. Del1r1um worked very hard to make a brush that is fifferent from the standard. Whether he had access to a lathe or not is immaterial. He figured out a design and method to make a brush without the use of any expensive machinery. He was kind enough to eliminate any proprietary aspect of the project and shared the process with us. Thanks Del1r1um!

Ecosse felt the need to make a comment other than the standard compliment. Rather than a simple "good job", Ecosse was compelled to inform us the brush reminded him of a *****. While there are many things in view at any given moment that can be construed as phallic, Ecosse didn't say "the tree in my yard is phallic" or "those bananas on the counter are pahallic" or even "I think my toothbrush is decidedly phallic and it drives me absolutely mad with desire every time I use it."

Okay Ecosse, I am curious now that you brought it up. Del1r1um's new brush reminds you of a *****. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? How do you suppose that would affect the generation and application of lather from your favorite soap?

Thanks everybody for you comments about the brush. I think I see where everyone is coming from on some of the comments, but I wasn't offended by the phallic post. But I have seen some good threads derailed by a sideline comment (even if it wasn't meant to be inflammatory). So I see where people are coming from. I want to get this back on track a bit, so I'll talk about the process I go through when making a brush like this.

After coming up with the design and getting the block of wood cut and drilled (for the knot), I will usually take a coping saw and rough cut the shape.

Next I use rasps and files to get the shape I want. Lately, I found that these little rasps for the dremel work very well and save lots of time

then I go from about 100 grit to 220 to 320 to 400, and sometimes to 600 (this time only to 400).

after the sandpaper, I wipe off the dust with a dry rag, then a piece of tack cloth.

then I finish...Ive been using poly, but next time I think i'll try some mono-crystaline wax just to see how that works (not that there is anything wrong with poly, just to mix it up and compare).

That's the entire process guys, feel free to copy anything (designs too) and let me know if you come up with ways that you think work better.

I like the looks of this.

I am looking to get a 28 or 30mm silvertip brush. Although I was about to jump on the Shavemac from Jim or Lynn, I would like to commission you to make me a handle. Or if you want you can make the whole brush. Whatever you would like. Here is the only requirement. I want it to be 28 or 30mm. You must let your artisan spirt run wild. Have fun with it and make it exclusively your taste and equally unique. That is it. Oh yeah, it must be a user and not a shelf queen.

I love to see people express themselves through art. In my opinion there is no bad works if the spirt of the work is pure.
