Tragedy! Behold the birth of Redneck Scuttle v2.0!

So the other day I was shaving and somehow manage to known my glorious Redneck Scuttle

off the counter of my shave den, breaking it into exactly 57 pieces. Damn, I'm out six bucks. So, I need a new scuttle, and I'm still not going to pay 60 bucks for something I'll most likely break again in the future.

Enter the Redneck Scuttle V2.0!
costing a whopping seven dollars and ninety eight cents at Lowe's in the garden section, it is slightly narrower and taller that V1.0 resulting in a tapered conical section, which I feel gives a more efficient lather. (maybe it acts as a forcing cone?)

part 2, how does it lather?

in short, rather well.

first, a shot of the lather being made (hard at work with my 28mm silvertip redneck brush): note how the scuttle forces all the lather to the bottom, rather than letting it overflow when I start gettin' busy with the brush.

(hint: this is a preview of my redneck soap v2.7 in action. it's a delightful cinnamon clove scent, made into uber-lather with proraso menthol, for a lather than smells like fire and feels like ice!)

I voted pro for the redneck scuttle. I used to use something quite similar until I broke down and bought my beloved Moss scuttle. Whatever works. :)

Oh, I like it. I keep my soaps in super fancy dancy bowls--$1 bonsai pots from the Japanese dollar store.

They're PERFECT. And I think your redneck scuttle is perfect, too.

I voted to buy a scuttle. My Schwartzweisskeramik scuttle holds almost a liter of water and I think it does a much better job of keeping the lather warm. It stays so hot with just tap water that it can dry out the lather, which is actually an advantage because if I put too much water in, it evaporates rather quickly.

Besides, we can't have a poll where everyone votes the same. There's an old Jewish saying: "If we would just all get together and pull in the same direction ... the world would tip over."

How can you know that, unless you have the redneck scuttle to compare?

I think it's a great idea, if you could buy those african violet pots here, I would have one.

My redneck scuttle was cheaper. It consisted of crap I found in my basement. It's just a ramekin inside a bowl. Of course, no self respecting redneck is going to know what the heck a ramekin is, so perhaps I should call mine the enlightened redneck scuttle?

I so wanted to vote along side chimensch to be contrary but I love the ingenuity and resourcefulness!!! These qualities are becoming a rare commodity in our modern society.

because I've spent enough time looking in garden centers and around the net, and so far, no luck in the UK. The closest I got was B&Q and they were all out of stock on the web and didn't have them on the shelves.

It's not like I'm just guessing, I have spent a bit of time looking, I'd be interested if someone did find them though, I could have missed them!

I voted 'Great Idea'. I'm all for saving money on the extras that make shaving a luxury and putting the money where the rubber meets the road, into the blades. It's great to have hot lather and finding a way to do that on the cheap would save me more money to put into straight razors. Everyone knows I need more of those! :rofl2: :D

p.s. I still find that I am one short of having enough straight razors. :gaah: A new lot purchase is expected soon and I will re-evaluate at that time.

Jockeys, allow me to offer my condolences on your scuttle's unfortunate departure. I know that nothing would bring it back. However, you may want to consider another option if you would like to replace it: Amazon.com: Norpro Ceramic Dip Server: Kitchen & Dining
This may be too conventional for your taste but would probably work well.

I say if it works for you & you like it, go for it! That said, I LOVE my Schwarzweisskeramik LK... :D

Before that, I used a small mixing bowl on top of a coffee cup warmer--accidentally let it get too hot once & deformed one of my (cheap) brushes...:o

I also voted for this, and would for all the other suggestions, as great ideas.
One of the wonderful things about this forum is that it is not P.C.. One does not have to use this scuttle, or any scuttle for that matter, or this razor or that brush. No one seems to care. Might make a suggestion or two, but you aren't going to be flamed.
I will look at our local home depot to see if they have something similar.

I voted for great idea, couldn't find something satisfactory in the local shops and just unpacked my tri-color Schwarzweiss LK scuttle. :)

I'm looking for another, I dropped my schwarzweisskeramik (it exploded, I cried).

I have a first generation G-Town pottery but it doesn't keep the lather warm like my old schwarzy used to.

i love this idea. i look every time i'm at lowes, i havent found one yet.

is that a custom brush? i love the length of it. lather always gets up to the top of my handle, its annoying.

i saw that brush a few months ago in one of your other threads.
no brush has ever caught my eye as much as that one.

I got my redneck scuttle A.K.A water planter @ Walmart for the unbeatable 3 bucks. I however find it too narrow for my custom brush and now I am looking to switch to something with bowl like shape.

wow jockey....I just watched your video and your brush is HUGE! what type is that?? I have only seen and own a tweezer man... but that thing looks like something you would clean your fireplace with it's so big.

God, I love cheap. I have dozens of old shaving mugs but I can't wait to try this.

So for a person like me who lives in the city without a car, there's not a single Walmart or hardware store worth a damn that's within bus distance. Anyone know of a place I can order something like this online? Those amazon.com ones were alright... but I would like to find some deeper ones, something more the shape of Jockey's new redneck scuttle.

i think its a great idea, why pay more for something that works the same? also cinnamon and clove shave soap, that sounds wonderful
