Hey, does anyone know where I can get a cheap(ish) (okay who am I kidding, lets go with "reasonable" or "justifiable") modern double bowl scuttle thing? Know what I'm talking about? The one thats like a bowl, but the sides of the bowl have a little hole so you can fill it with water? Like a double boiler. Not the old fashioned kind, but more of like if you put a bowl inside another bowl.

Not sure if this is what you have in mind but here are a couple from my DE days that I used before I got my small Moss Scuttle. The "poor man's scuttle" being a couple of bowls I got at Target and the other Col Conk being the old fashioned type. Both did the job but the Moss is great IME.

You can get one to whip the lather in, or get one to just park your brush in (for face latherers)
It's like the first thing you posted. At the WNY meetup I saw one that was a single piece of pottery though.

Sara's are $50 but well worth it. It takes her one month from start to finish to make one since you have to wait between processes to make a quality scuttle.

I have been talking with a local pottery gal here in my local town, and she is working me up a great scuttle, double cup style. I will post some pictures once she finishes it for me, hopefully here soon. She is charging me $45 for the scuttle which I think is a great deal compared to what she usually makes coffer mugs for! But if anyone is interested in this scuttle or one that you want more customized I am pretty sure she would be willing to take some orders.
If you could keep me posted on that I'd be greatful!

And nobody mentioned the Schwarzweisskeramik ones yet? ;) Yes they cost a fair bit, but they're quite nice. Then again, a redneck one has a lot of appeal too. ;)

Hmmm all of them look good but the prices are out of my league. Thanks for all the responses guys! I think what I'm gonna do is get some form of redneck version 1 or 2 and I'll save up til I can get either a custom (yours looks outstanding strapped), or getting one slightly modded.
I highly recommend working with a local potter. By doing so you can play with different designs before they're fired, which will allow changes to suit your specific tastes. Best of all, you can decide on exactly what color scheme you prefer, within the limitations of the material used. The color of the clay used for mine was rather reddish, so the colors used complemented the base. Gaye said that she could do a pure white for a friend, but she'd have to use a completely different material to make the scuttle.

Khaos, you haven't said who you spoke with, but I know it wasn't Julie at Dirty Bird Pottery as she could not do enough to make sure I was happy with the design of the scuttle she was making for me. I could have made it slightly larger, had vertical instead of spiral grooves in the bowl, had vertical as well as spiral grooves in the bowl, inverted the handle, modified the glaze, or even had it made as a two piece item. My scuttle arrived yesterday and I couldn't be happier with it, it looks great and performs superbly.

I won't say who it was, even who it wasn't because I don't even want to narrow it down. Mostly I can't afford a custom from those offering it. I think I will be trying a local potter first though. Thanks for all the help guys!
Whell i was thinking...e need also a scuttle..a modern one..i was about to buy it, but it was ridicolous for me to do it! Ie: My region of the North of Portugal is very known for the pottery..fine porcelain to. My parents owns a Fine Porcelain (LIMOGES) factory - made by hand products; + im an architect and have some industrial design friends! All of this = maybe very soon i will present the answer for who are looking for "upscale" scuttles. Just have to find some time...and i will find it!:)
Don't discount the old molded porcelain scuttles. They really to work too. Just a little different as the brush stays moister from the steam coming up through the holes.

i have a nice vintage scuttle i got from CarrieM. still trying to figure out the best way to use it. so you dont put soap on the top of it, use it to heat the brush?Quote:

Walmart, the gardening section, look for self watering planter, I just got one for 5 bucks and it held tap hot water warm for 30 min, I bet it will hold boiling water for longer. Mine is 2 pieces a bowl and a pot going into it.Quote:
