Ok so I think my last question was a bit long winded and confusing. So I'm trying a different phrasing. If you had $300 to spend on a brush what would you get? Brand, size, hair grade, handle type, etc.

I would have money left over. For me, it wouldn't get any better than a king-size Kent. Pure silver-tip badger.

I have heard great things about the Simpson's Chubby brushes. But I would just go for a Rooney 1/2 in Finest.
Or an Omega Boar. Love those boar brushes.
Best option: Rooney 1/1 in Finest or Super Silvertip and a half dozen Omega boars.
I would never spend more than about 40 pounds which is about 70 dollars on a brush. Its madness and unjustified.
Atkinson's in Canada gives forum member 10% off on Plissons if you ask for it and tell them you're a member. Rooney Finest is a great brush if you like them a bit scrubby and prickly. I haven't tried any of the Simpson brushes since Vulfix took them over but I read good things about them. The pre Vulfix Supers live up to the name.
IME Plisson HMW is sort of hit and miss. I have a two band that is prickly and firm and a three band that is soft like a Kent. I would probably go for the Rooney Finest. If I went Plisson I have found the European White to be a fine brush and more reasonably priced than the High Mountain White but as good in quality.
5 shave ready razors, and a Thäter brush.
$75 custom brush(some nice ones on ebay)and 2 or 3 nice razors.
As said above, I'd get a Super UK knot from the Golden Nib, for around $35, then spend the remaining $265 on razors. You could even buy one of those crazy Ebay Fillys with that! Much better utilization of cash than on a suds swirler.
I used to have a Rooney Alibaba, and that was/is a fantastic brush. But I like my $35 Golden Nib knot brush just about as much. Nowhere near as dense, but also just a fraction of the price, and it does have really soft, zero scritch bristles.
Simpson chubby or polo in 2 band. White tips, super soft and luxurious tips, very balanced backbone and resilient hair. My favorite brushes out of the many I tried or still own.
Oh, you mean "go crazy with the money"... :) Well, Serie 4376 - H.L. Thäter Dachs-Rasierpinsel Made in Germany then. And Serie 5068 - H.L. Thäter Dachs-Rasierpinsel Made in Germany is still on my wish list. I think that Thäters are every bit as good as Simpsons as far as quality is concerned (never mind my own Simpson:rant:) but they have more interesting designs, and are cheaper, at least over here.
You know... :deal:
I would have one made to my own liking (material, shape, hair quality and size), a uniquely hand crafted brush which would be totally mine, a one-of-a-kind nobody else has! And I would not spend more than $100 on it and for the rest get a nice razor or two!
I'm with Seraphim on this one. I have a couple expensive brushes [Over $100 each] and my Golden Nib knot on a cheap handle is just as good and luxurious at a fraction of the cost. I can have 5 or 6 brushes for what one factory or Custom brush would cost. http://straightrazorpalace.com/brush...rs-dollar.html

Im with Max on the two band! Something special about them. However, a Plisson in Natural Horn would be nice too.
Spending the money on the brush is the same as spending it on a razor. Same end result, but more fun getting there. The brush might just be my fav part of wetshaving though. So Im bias!
Thiers Issard has 26mm brush in natural horn that is supperb. I know that in Canada Fendrihan.com carries it.
Semogue silvertip brushes are fantastic in quality of bristle & workmanship AND price. But for a full on lather monster, try a couple of Semogue boars. Once broken in these puppies can hold their own against any $300.00 brush.
However, as is more often than not the case in our beloved hobby; "one mans meat is another mans poison" AKA YMMV;)
I have Roney, Omega, Kent, E Jagger and Semogue but I always come back to my hands down winner - the Simpsons Chubby 2 Super. A great brush, dense but soft. Good with both cream and soap.
I'll throw my hat in the ring, I like Rooney's finest.
I have a Shavemac DO1 Silvertip with natural horn. It is a fantastic brush. Works great with both soap and cream.
For $300 you could get 2 very nice brushes:
Simpsons 2-band super grade in whatever handle style suits you (Chubby 1 and Tulip 2 are my personal favurite).
Shavemac custom shortlofted in finest. I have one and it is a fantastic brush. The finest grade (not silvertip) is very soft but also firm so it works great with both creams and soaps (I am a soap user). I purchased a custom 177 45 mm loft, 20 mm knot for $85 USD direct from Bernd at Shavemac.
West Coast Shaving has the best price on Simpsons 2-band brushes. A Tulip 2 is $150.

For $300 you can get 4 (or more) of Stephen's Woodworking brushes. I have 2 and love them. Check them out at SRD.
Rooney Heritage "Victorian" The Rooney Heritage "Victorian" is a handmade brush with a lathe turned, hand polished handle in Imitation Bone. It is filled with a special grade of 100% "Super" Silvertip Badger that is unique to the Heritage range of brushes.
Overall brush height: 125mm
Handle height: 75mm
Brush Loft: 50mm
Knot diameter: 24mm

Rooney Heritage Victorian. Its tall so works well with a deeper bowl or scuttle, stiff enough for soaps, perfect for creams. Its expensive, around $175. With the money left over, I'd get a Kent BK4. Floppy? Yes, but so wonderfully soft, delicate....damn near erotic. I second the comments on the chubby...would be my 3rd (actually have one) but that would take you over the 300. The Rooney and Chubby are close enough, hence the Kent as my preference to fill out the bill. Oh, when 'bloomed' it looks twice as full.
Right now I use a 20mm Finest Extra knot from TGN on a old Made Rite handle that I got in a lot of razor that I restored. I owned a Vulfix 2235 in super before that and I got rid of it after I made my brush.
I can't imagine a brush performing any better than the brush I made.
The shaving brush is the one item I haven't gone crazy and bought every brand and variety available. Im sure I will eventually though
A lot depends on what is in the kit now and also how you use a brush.
If you do not have a sub $10.00 boar brush from CVS get one or two.
My favorite brush is a Dovo White Micarta silvertip. At the $110 I paid a bit ago I consider it an ideal badger brush. The Micarta is waterproof and if needed in ten years will justify a new knot. And it leaves room for a handful of different soaps and one nice shave ready blade in the budget. Or one matching Dovo white micarta blade... :)
Right there with you, brother. I'm glad somebody else likes the Kent brushes. I have a BLK12, an H12, and a BK4. My other brushes have become display items. I'd sell them off, if I could bring myself to sell any of my shaving gear.
If I was determined to blow every bit of $300 on principle, I'd buy a Plisson in horn. Just to look at, hold, and play with.
Then I'd reach for the BLK12 when it came time for a shave. ;)
Any Rooney 2 banded Finest.
Take Care,
Richard
See IceDog Brad Moroni...he makes one of a kind great usable peices of art...i have one of his originals and i love it....someone would ask to buy it i would tell them to take a hike! i hate the term but he is out of the box with his thinking and abilities! but def silver tip badger!
Wulfgar
happy holidays to you and yours!
What I did buy.
