i dont know for sure but looks like a type of scuttle, fill with hot water and use that other area to keep the brush warn, but im not positive on this

If I'm not mistaken, the open side allows the scuttle to be filled w warm water for your brush or to use for lathering, while the 1/2 shelf is designed to lather your soap/cream
usually they have holes on the soap side to allow the water to drain off and help keep the soap warm so I don't know what the idea is there.
It's this one's grandpappy!

if i'm not mistaken.. that cup was not designed for shaving.. it's original purpose was to drink hot tea.. the spot on top is to set your teabag..
I do believe you are correct, Victor, I have seen these before and this is what I was told.
i'm quite sure you could use it for shaving though.. why not just grate down your favourite soap and press it into the top portion? it may not actually warm the soap any, but atleast you can soak your brush and save a little water.
Nope it's a scuttle actually ,it just doesn't have holes.I have one and honestly........they're only good for looks.I am am avid tea person too but a teacup it aint...sorry.
did you purchase it from a shaving site or something? who makes it, conk?
Vic ...whom are you asking bud ?
sorry buddy.. i was asking you.. do you know who makes it?
Ahhh.....well,I got mine from an antique mart.I tried it out a few times and In this shavers opinion, just as there is junk in the world today,so was there back in the day.I currently use mine to hold q-tips and since it only cost me 12 bucks I may deep six it or just give it away.To me it's like the Gold Dollar of scuttles. Oh and Vic..read my reply on the cast iron thread heh heh .:beer1:
i will take a pic of the bottom of it, i got it for free so using it is not a must right now i have a few razors standing inside of it, and as far as the tea cup i would have seen it used for that lol, more than a mug, well go figure it at looks nice with a few razors in it.
What I use and works very well, you may consider it, is a small tupperware with a lid that is just big enough to fit a soap puck.
That way I build up some lather on the puck and face lather the rest. When done, all you have to do, is wipe the puck off and put the lid back on. A small circular tupperware works nicely for this method, I love it and haven't bought a scuttle or a mug since.
Another trick is you can put hot water in the lid and then put the tupperware with the soap in it on top of the lid so the puck warms up a little while you soak your brush elsewhere.
:)
Disburden,
i use the little tupaware while im deployed because bringing a mug or scuttle just isnt practicle sometimes. but i do find the lather is better from my mug i am still waiting on my scuttle to be made and sent and i am so excited for that

That reminds of this curiosity I found a while back. I always assumed the hole was potentially a spoon rest, though I couldn't figure out how to drink without poking myself in the eye, but I decided that the hole was a moustache guard, to keep my tasty beverage out of my facial hair. The illustration looks like a 'stache to me, unless it's a modern Mt. Fuji or something. I don't think this would work as a shaving appliance as the "shelf" has no depth.

That's what Ive seen them advertised as . If I remember correctly they were in the Harriot Carter catalog my mother used to get,Moustache cups...haven't seen them since I was a kid.
As correctly spotted, they are not for shaving, they are moustache cups.
