Hey did you pressure cast those scales and brush really nice
Printable View
No. Those are made from a material called Polygem; It's probably the last set I will ever make with it. The stuff is a bear to work with.
Funny you should mention pressure casting... I have been experimenting with scale casts, and have been kicking around making a pressure casting mold.
I hadn't thought about brush handles, but I have everything here to make my own molds and I've found some resins that I'm happy with. I might have to give it a try...
Yeah I've been playing with some resins and molds as well. I broke down and bought a vaccume pump, pressure pot and air compressor. Having fun learning how to play with this stuff. Not to mention taking moldings of old intricate scales.

I made this stand and brush because I had some extra antler left over after making a set of scales and brush for a fellow forum member.

22mm Super Badger from The Golden Nib. The handle is maple finished with oil and wax. It is held to an aluminum disk with an M4 flat head stainless screw. The disk and a little bit of the handle are pressed and epoxied into a laser etched chunk of Ti tubing. Knot is epoxied into the Ti tubing. Haven't tested it yet since I just put the wax on this morning!
I also made a little carrying tube for it out of bigger diameter Ti tubing.
A more detailed construction log can be found on my blog: http://tooling-up.blogspot.com
Thanks for a great thread everyone!

My first custom brush was made by PC Woodcraft - a beautiful 24mm Silvertip with Bocote wood handle
http://i1010.photobucket.com/albums/...ilvertip02.jpg
Then I ordered this stunning Malachite Handled 24mm Silvertip from Elite Shaving - it's perfect for face lathering

I just had this custom brush completed for me by Bill Stammetti.
I noticed Bill’s work and became very interested in it. Some of his work uses distressed wood. As I was interested only with the use of wood, and wanted something different, we made a connection.
The wood used here is from a pecan tree that had fallen due to wood borers. Remnants of the pests’ handy work are the dark tunnels on the base of the stand. Additionally, I requested that the brush handle be made to maintain some evidence of the deterioration; reflected on the base of the brush. Because of this, the brush cannot stand upright and the stand became necessary.
The knot is 24mm Silvertip badger with a shorter loft.
I understand this look may not be for everyone, but I am so very pleased with the outcome.

That is very nice, flows with nature.
Just wanted to thank everyone for the awesome pictures of their custom brushes. A lot of really cool brushes!
I just completed this brush. Geode base, Bull Horn handle, Stag Horn stand, Silvertip Badger brush.

Thats neat,Got a magnet holding the brush?
There is a brass pin from the stag horn into a hole in the handle.
Not quite as fancy as the others. I was trying to match the finish on my Gibson 61 SG. Apparently, A very hard finish to duplicate. Gibson keeps that info closely guarded, believe it or not. Thanks to deighaingeal

Thats beautifull,classic design.
Snazzy! Wow!
Love working on the lathe it's good therapy, glad I have SRP to share them with everyone. Here's an EverReady restore, I couldn't get all the white back in the stamping at the top (stamping wasn't deep enough), 24mm Black badger, I haven't decide on the knot yet it's just sitting in there, but I think I like it.

I just finished this brush a couple of days ago. The handle is Honduras Rosewood and the knot is 24mm silvertip. I really like it.

This was my first attempt at turning a brush handle. If I recall correctly the wood is bubinga and I finished it with CA and fitted it with a black badger knot.
Learned a lot from this one and hope to do another sometime soon :)

Here's my latest, Everlast jumprope handle, 22mm Silvertip Badger knot from Golden Nib.
Shown next to my decommissioned, drugstore boar bristle.
Simple build, just remove retaining clip, bearing falls out, replace with knot and epoxy.
The new brush is a dream come true, quickly froths meringue-like lather, badger is wonderful on the beard too!
If you got a huge Marvy rubber shaving mug, you will need a long handle to get a proper swirling around in it.
Im considering getting a travel brush at 12 cm/5" just to reach the bottom of this mug, since I almost have to put my hole hand down into it, which doesnt really work when it comes to swirling up lather.
