Best way to hang a brush

I have looked at several types of brush holders and brushes and I was wondering. When buying a brush holder, how do you know if it will be the right size for your brush. I have made several for my brushes and mine hold the brush by the top or center of the handle. I have seen some held just above the bristles, but mine are special made for each brush. How do you know when you buy one if it will be too small to fit, or too big and let the brush fall through. And if it is a spring type, won't that in time cause damage to the finish or the bristles :thinking:?
