Total newbie question i know: in use, how superior is a silvertip to other grades of badger hair?
I have a Semogue 2010 (badger) which is the brush i use all the time, with a Semogue 1470 (boar) that i got as my first brush.
I'm looking at investing in a silvertip, but i'd like to know if its worth the expense, hence the question of how much better they perform.
And any recommendations?

The higher end silvertip badger brushes that have not been cut to create the knot are the softest face lathering brush you can bring to your face. While they can be used for soaps or creams and with bowl lathering, the regular badger, synthetic, horse, or boar brush is a more effective soap, bowl lathering brush. I restrict my silvertips to creams only in the bowl or on the face.
Eventually, every wet shaver should own a silvertip badger brush.

My silvertip is the only brush iv used so i cant make a comment on how it compairs to others. But as others have pointed out, most of it will come down to your thoughts on not only each grade of hair, but loft size, brand name etc will all go into how you feel about a brush. Too bad we cant just try them all out before we decide on spending the money.
IMHO build quality and how tight the hair is stuffed is just as important than the grade of badger hair. My Simpson colonel best badger is way better than the two silwertip brushes I have.

The actual question is what are the differences between the different brush knots??? if you ask which is better you get everyone defending their favs..
One knot isn't better per se, they all have different attributes that stand out
I have one or two examples of each type except a high end Synthetic and honestly I like them all for different reasons, and as I figure out which does what better, I like that one better then all the others for that application..
I hope that actually makes sense.. in simple terms there isn't a bad brush just unrealistic expectations of that brush.. :)
Glen pretty much summed it up. It's all about preferance really...I have a silvertip, black badger, boar and a synthetic...all perform differently but in the end give pretty much the same basic result, they make lather and apply it to your face...lol.
I can tell you what history says but that means nothing to you personally. It's all a matter of what qualities you want. If a certain brush is floppy and expensive and you hate floppy then it's a bad brush for you. So, you need to tell us what qualities you prize in a brush.
Realize there are all kinds of grades and few standards and many outfits including custom makers and small-time makers so the possibilities are endless.
