How are you fellows, who turn handles, mounting them?
I saw where a 1/4-20 threaded hole is made inside the brush knot socket to accept a threaded mandrel. I'm not sure where to buy this mandrel, or into what type chuck the mandrel is mounted.
I have a Delta mini lathe that would probably work well if I can find the correct tooling.

No need really for the mandrel... Take a bolt and grind off the head... Your good to go. Just need a drill chuck for your lathe. #7 drill and a 1/4 20 tap also.Quote:

If you don't want to turn or hollow into the actual base you don't realy need to do this, just work back to the base & then cut it the most of the way through & steady with your hand to cut the final centre or remove from the off lathe & hand cut the final centre piece by hand then sand & all good.
note I haven't made any brushes but I use to make bowls & boxes etc amongst other items on my wood lather many years ago
ultimately you want a scroll chuck to hold it internally

I actually use a coping saw with a fine tooth blade to cut the base off the stock, just put the blade on the wood while the lathe is running and let it do the work ^_^
If you don't have a chuck here is what you would need:
Make SURE you have a MT2 taper:

Grind off the head: Everbilt 1/4 in.-20 x 1-1/2 in. Zinc-Plated Grade 8 Cap Screw (2-Pieces)-55518 at The Home Depot
DEWALT #7 Drill and 1/4 in. x 20 NC Tap Set-DWA1410 at The Home Depot
Of course you can search for the best prices for these somewhere else... Just an idea of what to get.
All good responses guys. I was a touch confused with the chuck arrangement I saw on The Golden Nib tutorial. It was not something I was familiar with.
I think I'll start with wood. Acrylics look tricky with avoiding chip-out, although, I know I'll get sucked in. LOL
If it's a delta midi lathe, shop master, you have a Morse taper #2 in both the tailstock and headstock. The thread size on the main spindle is a 8 teeth per 1". I have the same lathe. :). Here's the drill chuck I use.

Also use a carriage bolt I've cut down to use as a mandrel. Works well.
I have used a number of techniques. I am currently using a bottle stopper mandrel I purchased from Penn State Industries. There's no "right way," you just have to find what works best for you.
