    Default Some basic Oak

I found this Oak on a job site I was working on. The slabs of Oak were being used as pads under the main support columns in the house. We replaced the old beam and also the columns. Of course I kept the slabs of Oak. They have to be at least 50 years old, and are as dry as a fart in a wind storm. Sectioned them up on the table saw and revealed some very dark seasoned grain that look very nice. Had to throw some on the lathe and see what came up. Here's the result.

This brush was just a little experiment for me to mess around with. I think it came out quite nice.

The finish I did a bit different than usual, just messing with some new techniques. Tried and Tru Varnish oil was applied twice and allowed to dry for a week. I then buffed it with Tripoli, followed by white diamond and then Carnauba. The knot is a TGN 24mm Synthetic.

    Thanks for looking Gents!!

Simple is never out of style. Grain pattern can no longer be found. Its tight grain says that it is highly likely to be old growth Oak. They were not into cutting down saplings back in the day. Nice re-purposing .

That's good to know Jonathan. Makes sense about the tight growth rings. I have a ton of this stuff, and like I said, It's dry, dry, dry. Hard as hell too.

It's a shame that we have become so blind to the beauty of Oak. It really is such a nice wood. Unfortunately on our continent, they make everything from it and has become as common as a glass of water.

Have never been a liker of Oak till now. Tight growth rings did the trick to convert me to Oakism (time to revive the Druids and tree worship.)
