2, Acrylic and wood

Here's 2 brushes I have finished. The first is a chubby style brush made from Cocobolo and Olive wood. The knot is a big 30mm that's from Maggard's. I must say, this is a lovely knot if anyone is looking for quality knots to use. It was great fun using 2 woods that I really love, and it's been a long time since I've done a nice big handle like this. I really enjoyed turning this one.

The second brush is a combination of 2 acrylics. The shape of the handle is a classic barber style handle, and is about the only shape I can do to accommodate a 30mm badger knot, and is exactly what this knot is. Working with smaller material, but trying to keep it as big as I possibly can so the handle doesn't dwarf the giant badger knot. I think it turned out nicely.

Thanks Tom. Dang clear acrylic I had to re sand 3 times. Scratches show too darn easy. Got it tho.

Those brushes are completely different in style/material and both are beautiful. Very nice work.

That glass-like polish lasts for years, Andrew! Well worth it! :)

The liquid glass polish? Is it OK to use on acrylic? Suppose I could try it. My can is still good. Probably bought it 10 years ago.

Beautiful brushes, Andrew. You have a wonderful sense of form and proportion in all the brush projects you do. These are terrific, you must have someone strict working in quality control because the quality of your work never dips.

Andrew, Thank you for showing the lathe mounting with that chuck! I may buy one for the metal lathe at a shop I can use. I have a bunch of supplies..... What diameter is yours?

This is the One Way Talon chuck. Made right here in Stratford Ontario which is literally right down the street from me. It has adaptors to fit almost any lathe spindle size. Mine is an 8x1. ( 8 threads, 1" diameter.) I have 2 sets of jaws for it, but mainly use the smaller spigot jaws for brush turning. It only has an internal diameter of 1 1/2" when fully expanded, so I have to switch to a different set when I use slightly bigger stock. You can see the bigger ones in the first pictures on the wooden handle. The max size I can fit into a hole is 1", which works out well for 24mm brushes and larger. Smaller sizes I have to go back to some of my old school methods, like an expanding collet.

This chuck was expensive, but it does so much, and is so easy to use. Probably the best lathe accessory I've ever bought.
