Had to try another brush handle shape.

Dropped the wife off for a Dr appointment so it felt like a good time to go to Woodcraft. Found a 2×2×12 piece of Chechen. So after I got the yards done and the running around I do on my Sundays I turned this handle. Now its got a crack as I didn't get the hole drilled out on center as well as it should have been. Plus I don't have my chuck yet (damn Amazon) so I'm limited a bit. I will wait until I get my chuck to sand and finish this one. If it makes it without breaking it should be ok with a knot glued in. I think I will make another like this with a little bit longer and wider handle for a better grip.

I'm finding this turning stuff is not so bad. The cost is killing my bank account and I've been selling off radio equipment to make it happen but in the end, I'm happy with the trade. I got lots of radio stuff. LOL. It's like you just need the right tools, an idea, and some common sense and it just comes to be.

Here's what i use instead of a chuck. it's simply a dowel of the right size (might have to turn it ) mounted to a face plate. make it a nice fit into your pre drilled brush handle and then use painters tape to make it a snug fit. I use the tail stock while i'm turning most of it then once all the heavy turning is done it will hold it well enough to do the sanding and finishing of the end.Attachment 322268

Flutes? There are none. Just the grain of the wood your seeing.

And Vern-I like your tip on the dowel attached to the face-plate (with a woodworm screw, I assume?). And the painter's tape won't throw it off center too much assuming you try to be even with it?

Jerry-The grain on that chechen is going to be stunning. How are you thinking of finishing it?

Actually the dowel (or mandrel would be the correct term) is glued into the piece of wood on the face plate using a hole of the matching size. It doesn't allow for much variance in size but i've made a couple i can swap out by just unscrewing it from the face plate. if you put the tape all the way around the mandrel it seems to keep it pretty well centered. if you make the mandrel snug enough you don't even need tape (especially if its kind of tapered which is easier to do than making it perfectly the same diameter in my experience).
Depending on what i'm turning it does have a hole that i can run a screw all the way through the mandrel into the brush handle to hold it extra tight.

I hadnt tbought too much about finishing just yet. It needs sanded and i just wont have any time until next week. I might go with the Tru-oil.
