I did a search but came up empty.
Has anyone made brush handles out of cork or burl cork. I have some materiel around from my rod building days and my lathe is collecting dust so I thought I would give it a turn..

I don't know about cork. In my mind, I have the impression of it crumbling very easily. However, it may be suitable for your needs!
I would imagine u could stabilize it.
Or at least use some sort of ferrule for setting the knot. Maybe stabilizing the cork blank? Would detract from the project for me as I love the feeling of cork on a rod.
Soaking the knot only might be easier. Toss it in the sink of water. The cork floats up the knot hangs down.
I don't think that will be necessary. After all shave brushes really shouldn't be going through much abuse.
I always enjoyed the feeling of unfinished cork. The one is the pictures one was fished in lacquer and the other was just sanded and not sealed.
