Balsa core wet out coat

Basswood core wet out coat
Attachment 335700
the bass wood seams to absorb more resin than the the Balsa. It will need a second coat before sanding
The balsa is sanded after one coat and ready for the finish coats. One more coat of resin Then I am not sure what I am going to use for the final coat yet. I am thinking U-40 permagloss

That's going to be really cool. Can you share a link to where you get the carbon fibre sleaves? (And resin)
I buy resin from US Composites Epoxy :ÂEpoxy Resins and Hardeners Just because that is who I always used. Sleeves I used to get from soller Composites https://www.sollercomposites.com/.
But if you want smaller quantities just to give it a try you could get them from mudhole custom tackle https://www.mudhole.com/Components-R...Handles?page=3 don't get foam cores thy will be to small. but if you want to pour your own you can get that from US composites also.
First coat of finish. Trying out some water based polyurethane so far so good. still a couple of imperfections to sand out and recoat. Still unsure what I am going to do for the base.

If I got to choose the base it would likely be faux ivory.
It’s looking good. I am quite excited with your results. It’s a cool process.
Was thinking along the same lines Shaun, or maybe brass??
Or spit it up with a two layer base. A thin layer of brass between the carbon and ivory.
Looking good! How many layers of finish does it take to make it smooth? Is it brushed on?
that all depends on how smooth you get the resin layers and what you are using for a finish. I use a foam brush. have a look at this video. Tom is one of the innovators for the carbon fiber grips in Rod building. He is Using U-40 permagloss with is pretty much a one coat product but there is no room for error.

I Have an Idea to streamline the wetout coats so stay tuned.
