26mm TGN Gr.A in Iron wood.

Im happy to have finally got this sucker done and I can't wait to use it. Its a 26mm Grade A silvertip knot from The Golden Nib set in an Iron wood handle. The block of Iron wood was a chunk my Grandfather had been hanging onto for quite some time and never got around to turning it. So after sitting at my parents place for 16 years it finally got what was coming to it.

I turned it to replicate the Kent brush handles, they have always caught my eye as a nice shape. I bored the hole down to give me a nice 54mm loft. The polyurethane finish was challenging to do, it doesn't like to stick to the oily wood. Wiping it with paint thinner before applying the polyurethane is key, then sanding with 400 grit in between coats.


Here's a pic just after I was finished turning it without the finish and the knot just set in.

Really beautiful , a great job !

Looks simply wonderful all the way around! Great shape and the poly really makes the grain and color of the wood pop. Nicely done!

That really is a beautiful brush. It's strange but I find that I am really drawn to brush one of my favorites parts of shaving.

I love figured Ironwood

Nice looking Handle.Iron wood is a generic term,it describes no less than 40 diff, woods,do you know which one it is??

I think Lignum Vitae officianale,was it a dark greenish color before you turned it? If you still have some put it in a bucket of water,real lignum will not float,it sinks,Nice work.

You really do know yer stuff!! The pieces when they were sitting around have always been a dark, dark greenish color. I also did your experiment and low and behold, it sunk.

Here's a piece at the bottom of my sink full of water. Who'da thunk!

Thank you,Lignum is the most amazing wood,even today it is used as bearings in hydroelectric dams and ships prop shafts.just amazing stuff that can no longer be imported.

I guess I'll be saving the rest for, well, maybe more brush handles :) and also keeping every ounce of it for projects no matter how big or small the piece.

I was looking for an excuse to use my new Olympus E-PL5, so I thought I'd take a shot of this brush in full bloom. I've been using this brush 3 times a week for a solid month now and its just great. Couldn't be any happier with it.
