If I understand correctly, you're referring to what's known as the "Microsoft Tax": the built-in cost(s) for the Microsoft operating system when you buy it pre-loaded on a desktop or laptop computer. In such an instance, you can't get your money back for the Microsoft OS, if you install Linux in its place. Or can you? The truth is, (with some work) you can! But increasingly, you can find vendors that will sell you a computer without Microsoft Windows installed; or... vendors that will sell you a computer with a choice of Linux distributions installed -- in either case, you have to ask about it.
