Before this thread gets out of hand let me just say that I have worked for several years as a telemarketer, mostly fund raising for charities and non profit orgnisations. Trying not to sell crap to people who don't need or want it, especially the elderly and not well off. those guys are bad news and give the legitimate callers a bad name. Dude in the recording start with. "You've been selected" or something of that nature so you know he's working for the turd oganisations.

Here's my gift to all of you:
You think that that guy on the other end of the phone is a jerk because he's reaching you at dinner time and just generally interrupting you family time or quiet time or whatever it is. You also think that because you paid to be on a do not call list that you won't get calls and while it's true that you shouldn't get some kinds of calls, the worst kind, that's not going to stop other callers from legitimately phoning you.

The truth is, no caller is trying to upset your day or presenting himself with disregard for your happiness. He's being paid to call you when he's told to call you about what his employers want him to. If he's worth his salt at all (and those that aren't don't last very long) he'll actually want you to be in as good a mood as possible so that you might be receptive to his request or offer. There's no point at all in getting bent out of shape about the call and taking it out on him. You'll get logged as a 'No' and called again in a few months, when you'll have the opportunity to be mean bastard to somebody else all over again. The more you do this, the more it will come back to you. That's how the system works. Your best bet is to inform the caller that you would like your name and phone number removed from all list, never traded and never called again. It's best to do this calmly and respectfully so that he'll actually do it for you and not flip you the bird from the for end of the line and set you up for a call back the next day.

If, however, you can actually come up with something as creative and funny as Tom Mabe there, you likely already know all that.

Very good points. I must admit I don't mind most telemarketers (at first) because I know they are trying to make a living like everyone else. So I do try to be nice and listen to what they have to offer. What bugs me is when I say "No thanks" 3 or 4 times and they won't let it go. That's what bothers me the most. I'd like to find a polite way to get them to stop. Unfortunately, hanging up becomes the only option with some.

At any rate, it wasn't my intention to slap anybody working in that field, I just thought the guys humor was too demented not to share.

It's in the job description. Theyre instructed not ot accept a 'No' the first few times. Just use the suggestion I gave you and if they still don't respond ask to speak to the supervisor immediately. Simply hanging up is not a solution. It puts you back in the call rotation.
You can also exhibit 'Call Controll' by using the callers name frequently.
... ie. "Roger, did you hear what I said? .... Will you do that for me now, Roger? ... Thank-you for your assistance. I appreciate it. Roger? .... You have a pleasant day now."

I agree X it always pays to be polite I was once polite to a telemarketer. We had a very pleasant hour and a half conversation, He was all set to sell me some very nice aluminum siding and I was prepared to put on all the walls I owned. To bad it was then that he found out that I lived in an apartment.

Sorry but I just hang up on them when I do get a call. They do not listen and I don't want to waste my time talking to someone I will never buy something from. I will never buy from a telemarketer I was screwed by a magazine subscription, so fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me...

I know it's probably not the best solution, but my wife and I screen every call. Family and friends know we do it, so they just start talking after the answering machine message and wait for us to pick up or call back. I guess this doesn't remove us from any telemarketing lists...
