I used to eat possum as a kid. Like lima beans and asparagus, I don't have to eat them as an adult. I'm not sure that I agree about their being rare in the area years ago. I think they were common in Minnesota long before those big bales came around.

I only remember seeing them on a rare occasion. We never had any problems with them like my sister has when she moved to Nebraska.

Well, maybe they only were common in southern MN. You know, where it was a lot warmer in the winter--never getting much lower than 30 or 40 below!

After carrying it back to the house I could not get past the smell to clean it. :shrug:

That was a long time ago, I think if someone prepped it now I would give it a try. The possum we have is the Australian version. Our forefathers in all their infinite wisdom decided to establish a fur trade here by releasing a few breeding pairs along with rabbits and hares...brilliant. The Aussie possum is now controlled with 1080 poison to stop it devastating our forests. Was a good earn back in the day when a top skin would fetch $30. I would average out about $5 a skin, but then the bloody greenies got on board and killed the fur trade.
Beautiful fur, and the colder the area the better they were. Winter after molt got the best money.
Ironic they are protected in Aussie, shall I send you a few Mick?? Think I heard one outback..

You can keep 'em Grazor. I get sick of pulling the buggers out of my mates chimney spout where they seem to like to camp. Strong little buggers when they got something to hook on to I tell ya. I can't say I know their taste or smell, but if it's anything like rabbit, the smell during prep is godawful, but the taste would be divine.
