I've been involved in archery for over 30 years and own www.TradTalk.com , which is a site dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in Traditional Archery. I've competed at all levels in 3D competition and enjoy bowhunting for whatever the local game laws allow. :)
I'd like to get into it once the finances permit it. I know Colleen's into archery and so's one of our Dutch members (I think it's Kees).
We've got quite a few European members on TradTalk. I don't recall having ever seen Kees there, though. Maybe if he reads this. :)
I've been into it on and off most of my life, I really enjoy it but don't have time for it right now.
Would love to make my own bow one day.

Not as much as I used to be. I've made several bows over the years. One lightweight rodent bow out of osage, and a medium hunting bow out of sassafras, an elm flatbow, and one out of black locust as well. Got one partially-completed bow in hickory that's intended for knocking around with.
Uh, I love that stuff... Never tried it though. I would love to. I heard of "recipe" for making the bow out of those thin Nordic running skies...

I grew up in the country, and I used to make little quick-and-dirty bows out of switch cane for carrying around when I was rummaging around in the woods and didn't want to make a lot of noise with a rifle. You can make a surprisingly useful bow by taking 8-12 switches and arranging them in a staggered pattern so there's a gradual taper towards the ends of the limbs, then tying them together with a good nylon cord or duct tape and tying a bowstring on the ends. For the switchcane around our place that usually worked out to 45-60 lbs of draw.
Ive been shooting instinctively with both compound and traditional equipment since I could draw a bow. That and fly fishing are my two extracurricular passions. I guess one could add straight shaving now. :tuI like all things old and traditional really.
Cane (a type of bamboo) works well bundled together to make a bow. It'll shoot an arrow pretty good but it isn't very quiet. :DQuote:

I've always fancied giving it a try, I booked a course run by our local club once but it was oversubscribed and I didn't get a space - and they only run an new induction once a year. Ever since then I keep forgetting to enquire in time each year.

I used to shoot both recurve and compounds for many years until I had a bad work accident about ten years ago, and I mangled my drawing arm. It was a real bummer because I really enjoyed the sport :cry:

I shot barebow for 2 years.
I used a 50 lbs wood with fiberglass recurve that's older than I am.
Despite not using sights and stabilizers I could usually hit 7 ring or better from 25 meters.
Nothing is more satisfying than hitting the X ring 2 times with a crummy old bow when the shooter next to you gets worse with his top of the line compound with all the trimmings :)
I gradually lost interest when we moved to another city. Partly because the 15 minute driver turned into a 45 minute drive, and partly because the house took up too much of my time.
Where would I go to learn the basics of the archery game. I used to shoot a little when I was a kid, mostly at camp and stuff, it was great fun and I wouldn't mind joining a league.
I am brand new to the Compound Bow. Got a new PSE this winter. Ray, better known as Sixgun, has given me a ton of help already. Wait till I get ready for next season Ray......hahahahaha

If you're interested in traditional archery, TradTalk is the best site for a good introduction into archery without worry about getting a lot of bad advice and there is a lot of bad advice to be had. The guys on TradTalk are friendly, helpful and know what they're talking about. A number of the guys are top level competitors and a bunch more shoot like top level competitors. And everyone is helpful and pitches in on fielding questions. Actually, the entire archery community is good about fielding questions without giving newbies a ration of crap; the problem is more in the quality of the advice they get, LOL. :)Quote:

Sitting in a deer stand befor sunrise, waiting, quiet, peacful, and not feeling like a sniper. Thats hunting, just don't cry when you loose that broad head arrow. Pappa bull, do you make your own arrows to?

I make my own arrows. These days I use carbon shafting more than anything else, but I've still got homemade woodies and a couple dozen cured ash for some primitive shafts. :)
That's real old school Robert. Nice tradition to keep up. How do you come by it? The reason I ask is that I've heard the proper way to make a good archer is to teach his grandfather how to use a bow. Are you a 'good' bowman or are you preparing for your grandson's rise to glory?

Well, I don't have a grandson yet, but I've competed (and not placed in the top 5) twice, despite a few State Championships. LOL. :) I always find a way to blow it at the biggest shoot of the year - but so do about 30 other guys in my class each year, too. :D
