Your cynicism is amusing ;)
They are pretty much as rigged as that abomination you call wrestling.
:rofl2: Yes. "Wrestling" as seen on TV is called entertainment. Usually for male adolescents in this country. It's like soap operas with testoserone, ladders, chairs, a ring and hot chicks.
However, high school, collegiate and olympic wrestling is widespread. And we're good at it. Check out how many US MMA pros and amateurs have wrestling in their background. Oh, and we're good at that too. ;)
Happily though, they have come up with innings, time-outs and quarters so that the sponsors can get the most out of the commercials..
Commercials: We're good at that too ;)
Now football is not yet all that popular in the US.
Actually, it is getting very popular. Half or more of the academies and trainers are bringing in their staff from overseas. Primarily, UK. Competition in the travel outfits is extremely fierce and we constantly have MLS jr outfits scouting and recruiting. Mainly, Red Bulls (MLS) for our area. Oh, and don't get me started on the girl's football teams.
I've always wondered why I can't seem to find any other country where girls soccer is as widespread as the US of A. It goes right from 4yrs old to as high as you can take it if you've got the talent. We need a WMLS! There, I said it.
And I for one hope it stays that way.
Rugby is the real underground sport here, as far as I can tell. 7s or 15s, both.
That way the sport can remain a sport where there is 2*45 minutes of sports.
No time-outs, no players standing idle while waiting for Coca Cola et all to finish their important messages.
If the Americans ever gets influence in that sport, it will be 4 by 12 minutes of parading that will take 3-4 hours to complete.
Our advertising has a long way to go to catch up to international footie. Look how much advertising is already going on. It's world-wide football that started the trend of slapping a sponsor's name on every piece of a player's kit. Well, jerseys, at least.
So, here's hoping the US team places fourth in their group...
(I know, I know, the worst they can get after yesterday's game is third..)
