Five useful years in the US Navy. Electronic Tech. ETR3 1959-1964 out 8 days before they decided Vietnam was a war. Bless those who've come after!

Were it not for the Navy, I would not be who I am. I joined the Navy and some of my friends went to jail.
They put up with me and caused me to learn another trade which supported me more than once as time passed.

I had a great skill set I learned from the USN if the commercial airlines had decided they needed to carry bombs and missiles.........:rofl2:
I got out because the peace time Navy was not fun. Since there was no war to fight, the brass insisted on jacking with the troops. I was looking at a 7 year wait for E-6 even though I'd passed all the tests. Might have made Chief in 20. Couldn't go Warrant from E-5 so I checked it to 'em and never looked back.

Just re-enlisted for my last 6 years today. It's been a great time and it has provided for my family.
It's damned strange, Redcane! There are still mornings when I get up and look to put on a uniform! And I get misty whenever catch sight of the waterfront...I'm a weird one who misses going to sea. But I miss the camaraderie and sense of purpose most of all.
Don't get me wrong, though, I enjoy having time on my hands, sleeping in, and the time with my family. So I'm not complaining!
Even though I'm paying now for my time on the flight deck from injuries and hearing loss, and getting paid a paltry pittance of disability, I too miss the times at sea. It was all business but by GOD it was exciting business at times.
Best I recall, on our WESTPAC cruise, we had three bad crashes on deck, a couple of lesser crashes, went through two big typhoons, and fought a fire for two days when the bow cats lit up one afternoon and ended up taking out most of the 01 up front and both bow cats. Funny part of that story is the Oriskany was coming up to Yankee Station to relieve us and one of her screws fell off. She went to Atsugi for repairs in dry dock and we ended up spending three more weeks on the gun line carrying out the same number of missions with but two cats. Made for long launch and recovery cycles and even longer days and nights.
If I had it to do all over again, I'd do it in a heart beat.
Fellow Squid here. Spent 4 years in the fire room on the USS Koelsch FF 1049 from Dec 1975 to Jan. 1980. Lot's of stories to tell sometime.
