I wish I knew the whole story.

While looking for mushrooms last weekend I found a glass insulator like this in the middle of the woods. :hmmm:

There are the remnants of a building [log cabin] site on the land about 1/4 mile away and the ridge would be a poor choice of a route to use to go into the valley. The next nearest site is a long way the other way.

There are no remnants of a road close... Did it fall out of someones pouch while exploring a route?

Another sign of my boring life but I have spent over an hour daydreaming and wondering how in the heck did that get there????

Tons of them around and I guess many folks accumulate them. Different colors occur based on the glass used and exposure to sunlight over many years.

The alien space ship was running low on power. They hooked up to a power line, charged up, and as they zoomed away the line snapped and this insulator dropped on the ridge.

Was this along the lines of what you were imagining?

Think God I don't collect mushrooms,,, I would eat every mushroom I found,,, then I would be visited by those alien ships,,,:shrug:

Seriously,,, I don't think the placement of the road had a lot to do with power line routes in many rural locations,, as a child in the Appalachians I saw several homes that had their power fed by lines on poles that were placed in locations where there was no visible or close road,,, also saw them "power lines" attached to trees cut/modified for the purpose of mounting insulators.

My thoughts: man put it there for the purpose intended, route current & Mother Nature took it down to the ground.

We could stick with the alien option & make for a long interesting thread,,,;)

1960 My parents bought a house that at one time was the telephone office in our area. I had those glass insulators and many others in different colors and shapes. along with the old telephones and switch board. most of which was carried to the dump. In those days they were just junk. you could find them in fields and through woods where they ran the phone lines. There are places in the county where I was raised that the roads have completely disappeared over the years. some became part of the fields and some turned into woods. A lot has happened in rural America in the last 100 years. (i'm not that old just a figure of speech)

They migrate every fall. :rofl2:

I am old enough to have have friends that lived off the grid and they often had a car generator on the windmill to charge a battery when the pump-jack was unhooked so they had better lighting for the kids to study. Insulators sometimes were in use there also to get a wire from the mill to the house ...
That was in the later forties and one case in the late 50's.
