This was on the news last night Man from Conche, N.L., hits moose, but can't remember it - Newfoundland & Labrador - CBC News . It is bad enough with moose on the roads during the day but at night you really don't have half a chance. This driver is really lucky to alive, lots don't survive a collision with a moose. It is a problem in northern Ontario but worse in Newfoundland where they are thick as thieves.

That's why the old steam locomotives had cow catchers built onto the front of the trains. You guys ought to make one for cars -moose catchers.
The interview with the guy is a riot. Man I miss Newfoundland. I had five of the best years of my life there.
Moose were only introduced to the island a little over a century ago and due to the lack of predators (humans excepted), their population absolutely exploded. While that's great for hunters it can be very very bad for drivers, particularly in areas particularly prone to fog. And there are plenty of those.
Their long legs make them really dangerous. You take their legs out & they go right through your windshield.
Exactly. Happened to a state trooper responding to a call in Grand Portage, MN near the Canadian border in 1990 when I was working at a lodge north of Grand Marais. We wondered what all the sirens were about that night. His vehicle sheared off the legs and the whole body of the moose crushed and killed him.Quote:

It can be. It can also be tough as shoe leather if harvested from an old bull that wasn't cooked very well. :) That was my intro to moose meat, so for the longest time I avoided it. But now I'd have to agree that it can be very, very good. I'm a big fan of elk too.Quote:

In a lot of cases the more efficient "buffalo Jump" means of killing buffalo/Bison was used. One of the best examples is in Alberta Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump World Heritage Site . Industrial strength harvesting.

I grew up in New York and you see guys going hunting for deer and coming back empty handed and you guessed it they hit one on the road. I had a friend this happened to and it took out the front end of his car and left him with a forever changed face.
Sounds like the guy in the news story got his bell rung pretty hard.

It is scary how much damage they can do to a car, and the injuries they can cause. And even if the person survives the impact, they may have a injured animal with antlers that weighs over half a ton thrashing around.
