Growing a beard

This is not exactly shaving related but I suspect that there are some experts on beards on these forums.
As an experiment I am trying to grow a beard for the first time in my life. I am one and a half weeks in and I consider quitting already.
My beard growth is not very dense at all, so it just looks silly. On the other hand I have read somewhere that you should let your beard grow for about a month before adjusting, trimming, etc.

What are your experiences?
Should I wait and see while being afraid of showing my face in public, or acknowledge the fact that I can't grow a proper beard and just shave it off?

I don't know about waiting a month. If I wait two days to trim or style it's already grown enough ,, your beard just may be thin,, you may have to wait that long to see what you have Good luck. Tc

This is a big your mileage may vary. I grow a decent beard but it goes great for the first few days then the next week or so it looks somewhat thin. Then after that it looks a lot better. So I would probably suggest giving it about a month. At that point it will only get longer not thicker. So I'd say go for it. You can always shave it off if it doesn't look as good as you like. I have a decent beard after a good week, which is when I would start shaving the outlines. My moustache takes another good two weeks to catch up, though, as the upper lip stubble is noticeably less heavy. It's very, very subjective. I do think it looks a bit silly when people who have sparse growth insist on growing facial hair.

I don't grow a full beard any more due to my lagging moustache area, as I feel a beard without a moustache isn't really a beard; it reminds me of garden gnomes.

My suggestion is that - since you obviously have an interest in growing facial hair - you hold out for a month and then trim away until you find a style that suits you (and your face).

I've been growing a beard for the past two years. At first it looks a bit thin but fills in nice after about a month. I don't even trim it but once a month or so. Let it grow for a while before making up your mind.

I agree with the suggestions you give it a little more time. You're not risking anything by letting it grow a little more.
