All my weight landed on my right knee. No health insurance, dirt poor, so no x-rays. Couldn't put weight on it for about two weeks... and hurt like hell for a while after that... but I got real good at limping! Anyway. Except for this past year, my knee would hurt in a near crippling way every spring and fall. But I have found ways to prevent the pain, rather than mitigate it with a soft brace.
The first thing that helped the most was riding bicycle! If I didn't go for a good ride at least every two weeks or less, my knees would ache even when it wasn't the season for it. Bicycling is great low impact exercise, and it strengthens the small control muscles. A lot of contributing factors making it good for the knees.
Secondly, and this helped with all my aches and pains, especially my joints. The appropriate* Centrum multivitamin. Helped with a lot of things, including helping me become sleepy in a more natural manner/cycle. That is, it took some of the edge off my insomnia .
I hope this was helpful! (& I didn't babble too much.)
