:argue: Well, the low lifes just tried to upgrade my computer to Windows 10 without my permission, l was lucky and caught them at it and declined it. I have Windows 7 and it suits me just fine. Morons!. Let me upgrade my computer at my own time., if I want to.
I just updated mine about 3 weeks ago,,, a real PITA since then. The computer went to sleep every 2 minutes, unless you were typing,,,, it took a week to fix.
My computer runs slower with the external hard drives attached, when moving items from one location to another. Win. 10 Sucks.
I had the exact opposite going from win8 to win10 on this laptop and one desktop, both are faster. The auto update thing is really irritating on the one PC I'm leaving at win7, that I can live without

I did the free upgrade from 7, which I liked, to 10 which the jury is still out on. I did it because if you don't upgrade before a certain date it will no longer be free. As they did with XP, which was the first one I liked, they will stop supporting 7 with updates, and then you'll have to 'upgrade.' So anyway, it is on a laptop that I used at the shop before I retired.
I use Linux Mint on my tower at home and I'm quite happy with 17.1 Rebecca. But there are programs that are proprietary to microsoft OS and I keep the windows OS on the laptop for that. I haven't used it that much, but I did have to uninstall/reinstall more than one program. Have had the computer freeze ....... haven't had that since win 99. The laptop has the internals to handle 10, so I don't know what 'it' is, but it seems to have gotten over the freezing up. So glad I mainly use Linux.
I have considered going to Linux several times. Realizing there was a difference in terminology between Linux and Windows I would set aside some time to install Linux and learn the terminology. As luck would have it when I was just starting to get the hang of it something important would pop up and I would have to go back to Windows. I'll give Linux a try again some day.
The most painful upgrade I've ever accepted. Recommend a full backup on a remote hard drive before you do it.
Some of the Linux OS are much easier to adapt to because they've improved the GUI to the extent that learning the command line is no longer necessary. Building a PC out of component parts more cheaply, and then loading a great operating system that is absolutely free is a good feeling.Quote:

You could always set up a dual boot system (a very simple thing with Ubuntu - or at least it was. Haven't done a Linux install for a few years...) so that you always have both options. I used to be about 50/50 Linux/Windows, but increasingly find myself using Windows on the desktop and Linux on the laptop. My current used computer, courtesy of my tech son, was wiped and installed with Windows 10. He also installed the hard drive from my old computer. I synched the two through Chrome settings and can switch back and forth easily. Yes everything is faster but in general 10 is fussier and mimics a lot of 7 but adds steps. All in the name of progress.
Cangooner, my Chrome pops up immediately, wonder why the difference in mount time.
I likely need to do some plugin pruning. I suspect I just have too much going on in the background with Chrome.Quote:

I use Windows 7 Ultimate...... A buddy of mine who worked at a computer repair place years ago, hooked me up with a salesman copy of Windows 7. I think the disk has all the different versions on it too..... Pretty sweet eh? My wife switched from Windows 8 to 10..... PITA!!!
I have 10 and for me it's not that bad. I usually take the computer to the tec. at least once and some times 2 times a year to ck and de-bug or what ever you call it and it runs fairly fast considering my connection rate. I really don't know how he set it up but it has to be idle a long time before it goes to sleep. The programs i have work ok. A lot better than i do.
I'm running virtualized WinXP on Virtual Box for a few programs that won't run on Win7-10. Oracle Virtual Box runs really well on my Win10 machine, I run Linux that way as well
