Actually, at the time folks looked up to him. People like him if they were drafted never saw any action. They were given PR jobs for the military and treated like kings.

The Greatest...

"Ali's appeal worked its way up to the Supreme Court of the United States where, in 1971, his conviction was overturned."

Admired him in and out of the ring. Rest in Peace.
Hehe, I liked Clay, if he went DownV instead of UP^, I'd hope he would get the devil in the ring and kick his azz. Rest in Peace Casius.
I am somewhat a student of boxing having grown up with a dad who had been a boxer. I tried too, but was saving my face for shaving :-)
Ali was the best ever..fast and heavy handed. Truth be known, he was also a great thinker and provoked a lot of thought by his style and decisions in and out of the ring. He may have been braver than many who criticized him.
I wish we could have seen Ali vs Tyson, both in their prime.
My money would be on Tyson but boy would it be a fight to remember :)
Great boxer and quite a character. While being quite controversial, he stood by his convictions, backed them up, somewhat.
Interesting man for the times, love him or not, to be respected and mourned, RIP
R.I.P. Muhammad Ali, a legend in his prime!
I stumbled upon this and I really enjoyed it. I hope all will also:

It never ceases to amaze me how public figures, once vilified, become part of our collective persona over time. How those sharp jagged edges smooth with the erosion of decades and changing attitudes. I was a kid when Clay fought Sonny Liston. No one gave him a serious chance, and with all the bragadoccio, no one wanted to .. But, it was a far different time. Even I came to love Ali as a national treasure, but I admit, it took some time!
He persevered through his illness like the man he was .. Strong and brave in the face of a withering disease. Over the years, he earned my affection and respect! Truly,
"The Greatest."
