I need some help with RAD!.

o.k. I went a LITTLE bit overboard buying razors et al. last month so I am NOT buying any razors for the next 2 months. So give me a some encouragement guys. I think I bought twice as many razors last month than I have in the previous 2 months combined. So I will just watch and see if any get sold on me or re-listed. I have seen one razor that I like but he wants too much for it. I think he has re-listed it 3 or 4 times. BUT, If I find a box for any of my razors I will buy it but it will have to be in perfect condition. No "Raggetity Anns".

Maybe you do some things to take your mind off new acquisitions. You could go through all the razors you have and get them all shave ready, perform any maintenance that needs done like neatsfoot oil on scales, cleaning, adjusting, etc. Polish any scales that need it. Get the ones you have in tip top shape. Maybe take some time to enjoy the ones you have, research and document the history, take photos and make files on your computer about each one, get them organized, etc. Or you could just switch to HAD for a while.

You have to watch stuff like buying boxes if you're a haddict. For example, I had 25 pipes and bought a pipe rack that holds 36. Bad mistake. Had to fill it up, and ended up with a couple of extra pipes. So a rack that held 24 was next. I don't need to tell you the how it went from there ........... :gaah:

Your right Xiaotuzi, I do have a bunch of brass collars and washers I bought off the Bay to restore razors. I plan on going through them and see how many will need a re-pinning or a new handle (I have a couple of spares). I'll also get the hones out and see how many need to have an shave ready edge to. I do have to let some hair grow back on my legs for "testing".

I find these to be handy for razors. They take longer to fill.

Don't go on any auction sites etc, or to any antique shops/markets.

I've said this many times. There is no Hope for those of us who have fallen down this rabbit hole. It's the allure of the next find or the next shave with said find. It's the attraction of what is around the corner. And yes most important of all it's the fellowship of new friends . The ones we meet and those we never shall. I just bought a new truck so I don't have any disposable income. It has solved the RAD issue for a while

I've heard this story before! I wish you good luck and the ability to hold firm to your statement. I understand the pressures of needing more.....

I learned to control this issue many years ago. Is not easy, but the older I have gotten, priorities change, to me this is more of a lifestyle than a hobby. A nice dinner with my wife is more fulfilling than a razor.

This was very important in my transition to SR shaving. I think this could be even more costly than DE. The way I tackled it this time was to purchase a rotation. I have some customs and some vintage razors. Once I got exactly what I wanted, RAD was pretty much out the window.

No need to keep up with the Joneses, they are always a step ahead :-)

Me? About the same as Hector. Had my original two for more than 30 yrs before I discovered this site. I buy a couple every now and then just to try different grinds or steels but try to sell some off too.

I couldn't believe it - for me, was $75.00 and shipping was free right from California to Toronto.

For storing razors, it's perfect, not the type of box I'd lug around, it's not the sturdiest construction, but the top holds three Escher hones, a few DEs, and lots of odds and ends. The rest of the drawers store all my razors in their individual razors socks, it really is perfect, I'd say I have just over 80 razors stored in it. Really can't go wrong with it.

Ultrasoundguy started this all off with his Gerstner Machinists box, and then another member found the Harbor Freights box....:)

What is your end game? Does there have to be one? Experiencing various razor width, grind, scale materials is for many a process of acquiring quite a few along the way. If you suspect that buying razors is indeed something like retail therapy where you enjoy the thrill of the hunt and receiving packages and unboxings that then lead to needing a new high, you might do well to identify that as a possibility. Fidelity to one razor and really discovering how you can attempt to master a daily use tool was what helped me. In the end, you are not alone.

For me it helps that I have decided to have a list of criteria in order to buy a razor, first only 6/8ths razors, They feel better in my hand than a 5/8ths or a big "Chopper", and I have about 5 "brands" that I will buy also, (NO singles!). Also the Tang stamp must be clear and solid none of this half way or wore out crap.

That's like going into a bar and looking for help to cut back on your drinking :)

My rad was cured when i learned to make whatever razor i could want in whatever material i could want. Those are the razors i make witjout having a customer first. They still sell regardless.

I have a limitless supply of potential razors. My only limit is getting materials. I still want to do something in narwhal tusk scales though

You could just sell off some razors, keep 15 or 30, a certain set limit. Then when one comes in, one must go out.

I wish I could keep it balanced that easily. For me it had been three comes in and one goes out. The numbers are currently standing still. In order for anything to come in some must first go out. I do have several that could go out but getting the time together to photograph and then list and ship is a bit of an issue due to my transient life. It will all happen as it is suppose to.

This is what I have done, sold off about 10 to my local barber antique guy. and will have on E-bay soon a set of 5 Wm. Elliot & Co. No. 21's. (had a bit of frenzy going on there). Now its just 11/16ths or 6/8ths and ONLY quarter to half hollows, I have discovered the full and extra hollows give me fits trying to sharpen them. Also I am trying to be under $25.00 including shipping. If the guy charges that $6.80 for priority mail I am going to talk him out of it and use a regular padded envelope, say the $ 3.50 kind. I'm broke this month already paying doctors bills ($180.00 for a 5 hour Iron transfusion) paying a Credit card bill ($400.00) and getting some stuff out of the Pawn Shop ($250.00). It sure is hard though to beat RAD. Maybe just tame it a little is all you can hope for.

Oh, yea will somebody buy me that J.Wiss & Sons 6/8ths with the "candy cane" colored handle? He wants $50.00 for it and won't come down on the price. I have a J.Wiss and it shaves great!.
