So, where do we go from here?

The problem with 21st century democracies is that the people do no longer feel represented by the established political elite. They feel betrayed by broken promises and will vote for any outsider when they come along.

I feel that is what made a lot of people vote for Mr. Trump.

I agree with more of Clinton's ideas than Trump's ideas but somehow I like Trump more. He is genuine. Mrs Clinton is fake. One example: she says she wants to change the way Wall Street works but on the other hand she rubs shoulders with the Wall Street elite. I am convinced many people who voted for Trump do not agree with what he said about women, coloured people etc. But still they voted for him because they feel he is honest. I am not saying he is but somehow he makes us feel he is. And at the moment he is the only alternative to the political and financial establishment that so many voters hate.

We need politicians that practice what they preach and if they feel compromise is inevitable they explain this in crystal clear language to the people.

To those who truly believe compromise is a thing of the past, that is a prophetic concept. It is because the current divisiveness will not just continue but it will get worse and when one side keeps increasingly getting what they want the other side gets decreasingly less until they get nothing and eventually that leads to unrest and civil war and the eventual break-up of countries. Those seeds are being sown here right now.

Our system of government is based on compromise and if that terminates so does our system. The gridlock we have now is but a taste of things to come.

Just like the Other thread one says black the other say white, word of wisdom is to keep your religion and politics to yourself.

I don't understand wanting to go back to the good old days. Why would we want to repeat history, its history. I want to propagate a logical, safe and secure future. I grow weary of the Oka, Pine Ridge, Dakota Access, what we have brewing here is going to make all of those things look like a church picnic. I am certain that others that live in or with other minority groups can chime in their own events that keep repeating over and over like a broken record. What is it with people not being able to get along. I do dislike the party system as well. Why can we not, in each of our own districts, elect the very best person possible to represent us in the larger arenas. Then have all of those representatives chose the figure head and all of us run everything together and quit running through the streets divided like the gangs that ran the streets at the turn of the century. I am all for change, and I think the first change we should be making is erasing all of the lines in the sand, all of the us and them attitudes and stand together as neighbors, counties, districts, provinces and a country. I think that way. I vote for the people I vote for in my area because they work hard for all of us in our region. Both federally and provincially. Do we always get our way, nope, but we are still stuck in the party system, which is just a high fulluntent gang system as far as I can see from my corner.

You guys are both senior mods. I assume the Trump thread was shut down to throw cold water on the heated debate. Maybe I'm wrong. Can you elaborate? I'm assuming that opening another thread that addresses the same thing obviously leads to the same heated debates. If it was shut down to calm things, I don't understand where this one stands?

I,ll go on the record right now, I,ll stay out of here because I see that you really are trying to start a logical and thoughtful thread that In my mind has some merit. It may not seem like it but I agree, left or right , there can not be change without both sides admitting that we need to work together, this split has forced a rip right down the country and its is getting worse. if we find compromise and understanding, and the willingness to work across party lines then the government will be working for the people. we can only hope Tc

My old man used a quote that went something like this: I may not agree with what another man says but I will defend to my death his right to say it.

The Constitution is a self-correcting instrument. If you try too go to far to the left or right it will automatically adjust with our right to vote.

In theory that is very true but let us not forget during various periods in our nation's history whole populations of citizens simply did not have the right to vote or their rights have been monkeyed with. This has been done by both parties both legally and illegally. So that right to vote needs to be defended at all times for every citizen.

Let's also remember there are those on both sides of the political equation whose interests are best served by by conflict, division, and strife between citizens.

Maybe as this thread develops we will have the opportunity to examine these and other issues to better understand the problems facing us.
