Pet Peeves?

Why not blow off a little steam and share some of your minor annoyances? I know, I know..."Think Positive!". Sometimes a guy's gotta vent over the little things though IMO.

One of my pet peeves is related to pronunciation and it's something that I've perceived as making its way into U.S. English vernacular only in the last decade or so:

Pronouncing "st" like "shht". No idea where that came from. Instead of "street" ......a pronunciation of: "shhtreet".

Omitting the "T" sound all together in a word. That seems to be something I hear a bit more often whereas that never was the case before:

Instead of "writ-ten", the pronunciation of "wri - en"...

Yeah, I know, I must be a real kick at parties, eh? .....:D

more seriously though. probably my biggest pet peeve is when people state things as facts when they are either opinions or educated guesses. i've seen it creeping into the business environment in the last few years and it's toxic for good decision-making. it's also just annoying in social settings

When people cut me off while I am explaining something to them.

Words or phrases that become ubiquitous, such as 'gone viral', 'at the end of the day' ........ that sort of thing.

Use of the words on the News "We have a very Fluid Situation" instead of "We have no freaking clue but we gotta be first"

I have one that's right up your alley, Glen and will, I'm sure make you chuckle. I know I did:

We have a local doctor in town who through the years has invested in commercial real estate mainly buying old dilapidated downtown buildings, some of which have been a bane to the city (e.g. housing a dive bar and flophouse with tons of crime and finally arson). According to the local news recently, he apparently owes over $2 million in back taxes to the IRS over a 7 year period. His explanation for not paying taxes? 1) His accountant retired 2).......He's a very very busy person (because, you know, the rest of us are just sittin' around). Yup, entitlement attitude comes in many forms.

One of my favs is coming up soon

Every year we have a local music festival up here Festival at Sandpoint

It only runs because so many of us volunteer to help each year, I work Stage Security ie stand at the corner of the stage and look pretty hehehe been doing it for 10+ years now

We have ushers that help get people seated and keep certain aisles clear, as per fire code... Seating is first come first serve and a big deal to get front row :)

Without fail nearly every popular show the Ushers will come get me to move some "Special" person that has decided that standing in the aisle blocking everyone else's view is their right to do..

I have actually had people tell me "I don't care about them" when I explain that they are in the wrong area and blocking other people's view of the show..
Some get really twisted when you explain that they are not special and have to actually move, Honestly I giggle every damn time :p

Corporate bullshite speak....every time I hear it, I want to spew a mouthful of coffee at the speaker...was a great article about it.

Winners are,"“In the wholesale channel, Burberry exited doors not aligned with brand status and invested in presentation through both enhanced assortments and dedicated, customised real estate in key doors.”

Or, Starbucks CEO, that the new Starbucks Roasteries were “delivering an immersive, ultra-premium, coffee-forward experience”.

And this gem, CEO of Cisco, fired off an email to underlings beginning “Team”, and ending: “We’ll wake the world up and move the planet a little closer to the future.”

This type of crap, akin to the famous, "That's unacceptable" and, the finger waving, "Fix it", hot air filled with no meaningful contribution to the discussion or really any relevance to solutioning - reminds me again why I bailed on the Corp world and stick to consulting...:banghead:

But alas, there is still no escape from it, as I find out on a daily basis, senior execs smiling while the ship lists heavily to starboard, taking on water, most of the crew and passengers long gone, but it's all good.....:o

Sense i cant spell big words and dont read anything i dont have too, i dont have the same kind of word issues as you guys. Mine is the guy that has just got to be in front of the big truck then realizes hes going too fast then slows down in front of the big truck. Then i move over to pass and he speeds up because he just cant be behind a big truck. I do my best to not play bumper cars with these idiots but sometimes its very hard not to just bump them off the road.

sorry Jerry but my big peeve is trucks side by side on the highway on an Interstate, one trying to pass the other , at 62 MPH while the other guy is doing 61.5 and 3 miles later gets over, its a 70-75 MPH and I cant even figure out why they are even attempting, just saying Tc

Oh yeah...like a rolling road block, or the trucks who drive in the left hand lane on the highway.

My big one here, urban street, 4 way intersection, two northbound lanes at the stop light, two 18 wheelers, side by side, so they can drag race each other through 16 gears, like a slow moving wall, so instead of 150-200 cars making it through the intersection, 30-40 do....that makes me crazy.:(

English is a complex language. However, it does amaze me when I see folks with a far higher education level than I, manage to mangle it so badly.

While we're on the subject of road pet peeves. Here's one for me:

I'm in the right lane on a freeway behind a slower moving vehicle. I signal and move to the the left/passing lane. There's a car waaaaaaaaaaaayyy back there already in the passing lane far far behind me. That driver hits either the button for nitrous or flips the switch to engage to light speed, I'm not sure which, and is instantly on my bumper even though when I changed into that lane the driver was four football field lengths behind me......

As a high school English teacher, I could write a book on the language issues that frustrate me. On the road, what enrages me is that every other person you drive near is weaving all over with a damn phone in front of their face. God, that burns me up!:overkill:

And yeah, entitled people who think the rules of civilized society apply to them-get off my lawn, and go crawl back under your rock!:p

I've always wondered if this is done on purpose? I'm not trying to start a battle here, but I've just always wondered that... is it on purpose or can they really not see the truck beside them and 50 cars lined up behind them
(honest question to the truckers out there, I dont know any to ask in person)

One of my biggest is when you are driving around a turn on a two lane road and the oncoming idiot going around the apex of the turn is over the centerline encroaching your lane. Makes me wish I was driving an old 10 wheel dump truck with a plow to see if the moron is ready for a game of "chicken."

And yes Tc..the slow truck passing the slower truck when the interstate has two lanes on each side.
Definately a blood pressure raising moment.

Yes, especially at a merge of lanes. It increases the speed of one lane at the cost of the other. Then the one will let the other in at the end.

Here's another one in traffic. I don't know if this is just in the South, or if these obnoxious jerks exist all over. Okay, I own a pickup truck, a newer, loaded Tacoma 4x4 that is my pride and joy. But it is not 'Mercan (though it was made in Brownsville TX), and it is not jacked up so tall that you can walk under it without stooping over. It is not straight-piped , nor does it have aggressive decals all over it. Or truck nutx, jeez-how pathetic. It doesn't "roll coal."

But there are a LOT of guys around here with trucks like this and, invariably, they drive very aggressively, tail-gate, and are just like insecure punks on steroids in traffic. My wife calls these trucks "substitutes" (you know for what), and I concur. I don't know, as someone who has taught teenagers for 20 years, a hyped up sense of ones's masculinity that is invariably based on insecurity is just exhausting (and often dangerous) for others to be around.

and Aaron, that is my number one peeve of all time,, talking texting, emails lipstick doing your hair,, you know its against the law, and it kills people,, my son is a Paramedic in St Louis, and had the misfortune of working a fatality, turned the young girl over and turned out to be a girl he went to school with and was family friends with since grade school. shes dead and the the phone was being used for texting when she drifted into oncoming traffic. not only killed herself but an innocent family lost 1 child and the dad Tc

Yep, just as dangerous as drunk driving statistically. Speaking of phones, here's one: You see her in restaurants, at the movies, etc. She's a stereotype I call the "real estate lady." She takes a call, and walks around talking real loud so that everyone can see how important she is, the big deals she's making, etc.

Now that I think of it, most of my pet peeves seem to involve cell phones. in some way.

One from me.
I am in the fast lane and the traffic is heavy. A car fast approaches behind me, clearly the driver is in a hurry, they pass me on the right speeding up way more than the speed limit just to end up right in front of me. Tell me what kind of advantage in time is that? It sure brings risks to the other vehicles around them. I admit that sometimes I put the pedal to the metal and do not let them pass me.

Almost as bad as the driver blocking both lanes when driving are the Oblivious people at Walmart, that decide the middle of the aisle that I am trying to get through is where they need to stop and discuss life in general.. The best part is that they seem to think you are the rude one when you say "Excuse me"

That's about as bad as a customer ahead of me in the Duncan Donuts line ordering an entire hot breakfast. It's a dang donut shop, not a dang Piccadilly's Restaurant. :shrug:

TC, i understand and feel the same way about passing trucks. I see this all the time. A truck trying to pass the other at a difference of 2mph. I feel if im behind someone that is slowing me down by 2mph im not going to be slowed down that much time so i back off and set the cruse. Others think they just have to do top apeed of there trucks. This is normally caused by governed trucks. One guy can do 63mph and the other only 65mph. It burns me up too.

And as far as the two trucks you see running side by side at construction merge, what they are doing is blocking one lane so others will stop trying to pass and cause the flow to get bottle necked at the merge point. By doing this everyone has to slow down to the same speed and the merge happens safer and easier for all. Its the cars that want to jump back and forth thru the traffic to be one more car ahead that makes drivers do this. We cant merge as easy and when there is 8 cars bumper to bumper and the lane that needs to merge cant is an issue. This way everyone marges and goes the same speed. Im sorry to all who hate this but its a safety thing that a lot of us driver will do. Even when we dont know one another and if no radio comunication. Its just something that most experianced drivers exspect the next truck to know.

The walmart isles is a good one Glen. Two old ladys blocking everything. Im not in walmart because i want to be there. I want to get what i need and leave so make room!

Anyone with phone in hand while driving is just wrong. I admit once in a while i will pick mine up but its just to hit a speed dial button or snap a pic but i feel it in a safe type situation. Not text. I can stop and text if i feel the need. It dont take that much time away from the drive.

I hope i dont offened others here by my comments and when driving but most the time the idiot truck drivers are the ones that havent been doing it for years. They are in a big hurry and havent learned that a few minutes or miles isnt going to make that much differance in there day.

So the bottleneck happens behind the trucks instead of in front of them. I find it hard to believe that the trucks do this out of the goodness of their hearts.;)

Around here they have adds on the TV to try to get people to merge at the merge signs and use both lanes during backups.:shrug:

Zipper Merge

Companies like Klar Seifen making awesome soap in the shape of a skinny cylinder with little space for the brush.

Regarding truck drivers, I find that most of them drive in a professional manner - to a far greater extent than the rest of us.

Being a cantankerous sort, I could write a pamphlet of driving peeves. :soapbox:

Zipper Merge

Being a Minnesotan as well, I just don't believe that the zipper merge is more efficient. I can't be convinced of that. When that first came out in papers that MNDOT encouraged a zipper merge and said it was better, I was skeptical from the start.

The reason I don't think it's more efficient is in the "traditional" merging of two lanes to one, alerted by signage well in advance, there are the people (like me) that merge early. I also let others in in front of me for a period of time. None of us, however, like the others who "take cuts" and run in the left lane all the way up to the single lane convergence. People who merged when they were "supposed to" will NOT generally let in the "cutters" which in my opinion then creates a bottleneck.

To me it's encouraging bad behavior.

The merge sign is about 1/4 mile on average before the lane ends. If you should merge 4 miles before that they would end the lane or put up cones there. If you don't want anyone "cutting" in front of you in the line, merge and/or allow people to merge at the merge sign not 3.5 miles early.:shrug:

I am sure that most of us here on this thread would agree with me in that, "If I was in charge the world would be a heck of a lot different place!":rofl2:

The zipper merge works if done correctly. Unfortunately at least in the twin cities if you drive all the way up to merge people tend to yell and give you some sort of hand signals.

I remember when cell phones became popular and portable. This was a common occurrence of people talking loud and putting on airs like they were important.
