I just heard on the news that Doug Ford has stopped making us pay for our license plate stickers from March 13th. No more stickers, no more $129 a year, or $60 up north.

Not only that but we are all going to be refunded from 2020.

I'll take the dropping of the $60 fee for a win while I can. The cynic in me wonders if there is a connection to the next scheduled provincial election slated for on or before 02 June 2022. My next thought would be where are we going to be hit with increases to make up the revenue shortfall cancelling tag fees will cause. Yea, I always look a gift horse in the mouth.

For the guys in the UK, the license fee that is being dropped is the Canadian version of your road tax, except it is stuck on our back number plate instead of a paper tax disk in the windscreen and it is renewed annually on our birthday.

In Southern Ontario it cost $120 a year but in Northern Ontario where BobH lives it's just $60

That is supposed to be compensation for the awful highways and terrible maintenance of same as compared to southern Ontario.

I get you Bob, Elliot Lake is Northern Ontario, not as North as Thunder Bay but they also Pay $60 a year and your right about the roads up there.

Don't think that the roads down here in the south are all like roller skating rinks.

My biggest bitch, aside from the terrible highway maintenance in winter, is the hundreds of miles of the Trans Canada that is not yet divided 4 laned. It is the main highway for trucks hauling goods through this area of Canada. The transport traffic is horrendous.

Yeh, and as soon as you cross into Manitoba, the Trans Canada is 2 lane dual carriageway all the way to BC.

Proud to be born, and raised in Ontario as well gents, and am ambivalent towards the licensing “savings” as I too think it will just be redirected. But happy we are going one more step towards automated renewals and the like assuming you keep a clean abstract.
And regarding the llack of 4 lanes north of say Barrie, well I quote current pricing;

“Construct a new 4-lane highway — $4 million to $6 million per mile in rural and suburban areas.”

And except at peak there is just not the traffic to justify it across the more sparsely populated parts of the country, let alone maintains the said extra lanes all year.. it’s clear to me why they aren’t 4 lane hiways yet..

I get your frustrations though living there and dealing with the traffic, such as it is.
