I.E.7 HELP PLEASE

Hi,

I need some ideas for Internet Explorer 7 which I'm having problems with at the moment. It almost seems to have started since the last auto update.

I'm at work at the moment so am just relying on my memory but for the last week or two every time I go to close a window it hangs for a few seconds and then comes up with an error message telling me that it has to close down, but not just closing one window but all of my windows.

I have looked at the details of the error message and it seems to change each time. I would like to try a screen capture but can never remember when I want it how to do it.

I suspect that it is probably one of my plug ins that I have running with IE7. I have tried doing a search for something in the MS knowledge base but perhaps my terminology is not quite right. Any ideas anyone.

When you get back, copy down the errors. Does it happen every time you go to close a window? Does it do it on a particular website or any? What operating system?

Lastly, try firefox. I was a staunch believer in IE for the longest of times, but after getting tired of dealing with problems like yours, I tried out Firefox. Besides getting less viruses, I like that it doesn't create hidden history files that you have to enter DOS to delete.

Yes it happens every time I close a window, and not on any particular site. I do run firefox also but found just some sites would not load properly so I went back to IE. I am also running XP.

Sorry to hear about your issues. I was wondering which Operating System you are running at the moment
Vista or XP

Generally speaking Vista has been a buggy and and absolute nightmare.
I would strongly consider using Firefox instead IE

As a software developer that would be my best recommendation.

Maybe you can post it here and I can give you some clue about the issue.

Firstly I would try disabling some of your add-ons. If I recall correctly, you can actually roll back your IE updates. If disabling add-ons doesn't work, try to roll it back or just plain re-installing it.

Yes I may have to give that a go I think, at the moment it's just a pain in the A$$.

flanny's solution is of course the best, but if you want to try something less invasive you may want to try using firefox as a browser.

the problem you are describing sounds like a segmentation fault, i.e. poorly written software (ie7). looks like it is trying to access part of the memory that it shouldn't be touching (because it has not reserved beforehand) and gets a slap on the wrist by windows. this is a very common problem with any moderately complicated software which tries to use tricks in order to be efficient (the tricks not done right are the usual culprit). the problem in your case is certainly in microsoft, and your only hope is to either wait until they fix it, or as it was suggested disable some of the extensions which may be triggering it (the problem will still be there but it won't be triggered). unless of course you don't mind using a browser designed by somebody else than microsoft.

I cant tell you how many people have reported problems with IE7. Most corporations I know of don't even allow IE7 to be run on any computers running on their network...that should tell you something. I like firefox myself, but I would just use the add/remove components option to get rid of IE7 and load IE6 again.

You mentioned earlier that some pages didn't load right in Firefox. This used to be a problem, but by and large it's been fixed. Give it a whirl with the latest version and see if it's any better.

IE7 is like Vista- you're lucky if it runs right:shrug:
