I don't follow football, and I haven't watched the superbowl in years, but I just read that the giants won. Maybe it was the pressure, who knows, but I can't believe the Pats didn't win. That's pretty cool for the giants to beat the winningest team in history. I bet they're having on hell of a party:D

No kidding. After having a perfect season, there's no way I would've put all that money on them...nooooo way.
It was one of the best super bowls in years (I think :D) --------but I'm glad the Giants won so Eli Manning could get the monkey off his back and maybe stop living in his brother's shadow ---- good job.

I think the turning point was when the Pats went for that 13yd 4th down conversion. That's when I said to myself "they're goin' ballistic and the Giants are gonna win," even though they were on top at that point.
They obviously wanted it more and played like it. While Eli deserved the honors, there were plenty of other guys that were just as deserving.
I think the entire Giants front line could have been MVP. It is hard to throw touchdowns from the ground...:D

They are if they can help generate the revenue ---- in the scheme of things, their skills aren't worth that much, but when the amount of money generated by playing,watching football,etc is what it is, they are worth what they get paid or they wouldn't be getting paid that much money.Quote:

I am horrible at most ball games except soccer, but if the nation would tune in and watch me play terribly, then I'm totally worth that. What the team shells out, they get back many times over in network deals, merchandising, and people coming to watch and support me. The networks make millions off of just one game via advertising. Of course, don't forget the advertising that is physically at the game.
I know it's the biggest game of the season, but just for 30 seconds, CBS charged $2.6 million. Figure in at least 5 minutes of commercials at the very least, and that's some serious change in just a few hours. Furthermore, factor in the amazing fact that superbowl ads in and of themselves are entertainment- people (including me) will watch the ads just to get a good laugh! All I can say is helloooo money!
I think its silly that players make that kind of money and I think it is even sillier to sit and watch the game as opposed to actually playing! I love playing the game but hate watching it as it bores me to tears. As much as I hate to say it though, Justin and Quickorange are absolutely right!Quote:

I've noticed a development from my days (I played Rugby Union, Rugby League, and *some* Gridiron) - there's a lot more padding used in the Rugby codes nowadays. Not to the extent of American Football, but there are shoulder pads, head guards, some guys have thigh guards strapped to them like bandages....
I don't watch American Football (it's on late at night over here) so I can't comment on the size of the hits that are made. But you should check out some of the tackles (especially in the early stages of a match) that Rugby League players make. Enormous!:y Of course, as the match progresses the tackles become less spectacular, as we only have a limited interchange bench and there's (relatively speaking) very little stoppage time in League.

You really need to actually see the NFL game played
to realize the severity of some of the hits. A player
running at full speed from one side of the field
to the other and making a head to head hit makes
a pretty impressive noise when you're in the
stands with 65,000 other people. You can only
imagine the force needed to make that
kind of noise. Even with all the equipment
people end up with concussions and there
have been some paralyzed.

I guess it depends on the type of fitness you are talking about. It seems to me that rugby players are like Tuna fish --- always moving and are in extremely good aerobic conditioning. American footballers (as you say ;)) , are like a large mouth bass ---made for short runs with high acceleration and have such muscles better developed. I know there is some crossover but I think this is basically true. I've watched rugby and enjoyed it --- both are fun games, just a little different. Maybe some of you guys should pad up and take on a professional football player or two ---I know rugby's tough , so I'll just imagine getting a rib or two cracked. :)Quote:
