Seems to me as though there's a general pattern to the off topic forum - things plod along nicely, small (or large...) scuffle breaks out, mods step in, people suddenly get a refresher course on what the rules they signed up to mean in practice, discussion of the off topic area ensues, things go back to normal.
It's probably just a natural and understandable phenomenon, and I personally think we have done well to have gone this long between fracas particularly when you think about the rapid rise of memberships since the beginning of the year. We are, in general, a confident, intelligent, strong-minded group with strongly held beliefs and opinions - heated debates are fine and natural, and the mods are there to gently direct and guide in the first instance, and directly intervene if people can't take the hint.
