I guess it is slanted when compared to the ultra religious ideas which are all encompassing, because they don't believe in educating anyone about sex or std's, they don 't believe in birth control, they don't believe in the morning after pill.

I guess so but they are the counter point to planed parenthood and have a definite slant on what they present. I can remove the "right" I guess and say the ultra religious.

It's all about power, knowledge is power and for years the Church (all of them) have tried to control knowledge to have power over their subjects.

Has it really escaped your attention that this is a politicized issue? Ever noticed that almost everyone thinks abortion is dead wrong, but that illegalizing it is probably a bad idea, but that they call themselves pro choice if they are democrat and pro life if they are republican?

If you take smokelaw and my arguments, they are almost identical. I'm a Republican. I bet he's a Democrat.

Hmmm, seems like we are at a different kind of divergence here.

Up to this point the discussion seems to have focused on the act of abortion itself, when life begins, etc.

I believe that all the posts I have made were based on reasoning and presented as such, not as religious points of view.

I think that when we get to the point of saying "the Democrats this...." and "the religious right that...." we are then discussing abortion politics. Which is relevant, but makes personal discussion perhaps more difficult, as it would seem that you must get lumped in with one grouping or the other. i.e.- a damn liberal, or a right wing religious nut job.

I can't say as I'm a republican because other than their pro-life stance I can't stand most any of their other policies. I can't say as I'm a democrat either, as I prefer some of their fiscal policy better, but I'm not so pleased with social/moral issues.

I think we reached that divergence a while ago. I say "if you don't know when the spark arrives in the fetus, how can you kill it", the response is "the religious right kills innocent people with the death penalty." I say I'm concerned about kilinIg defenseless babies, the response is "if you were a woman you wouldn't feel that way." [perhaps if we were all fetuses, irrespecitve of gender, we'd reach consensus on this]

I'm a Republican but I've probably voted for more democrats than republicans (haven't counted but I think so) because I vote on who I think is better in each election. I'm not religious at all - totally agnostic, raised protestant but converted to judaism because my wife cares about that, and in return I made her convert to a dog person because I care about that. I just don't think it's fair to kill defenseless babies, and I don't know why the thought that someone might say that inspires such anger. And when I've probed, most democrats feel a serious need to be identified by their liberal peers as right thinking, and therefore they say fervently how much they support choice, even though they admit they would NEVER do it themselves and think that making the choice to do so is murder. That's political.

I am right. If you don't agree with me it shows how truly ignorant you are. I am not saying that there's anything wrong with you being ignorant. I am only saying that the world would be a better place if you admitted you don't know what you are talking about and learn from me.

Well, I will admit I vote democrat nearly across the board. I am a registered independent, and as soon as my ideal candidate runs, I will vote for him/her/it regardless of party. It's tough to find someone who is pro-life, pro-gun, pro-environment, and believes in social welfare programs where enough is spent on the prgram being RUN RIGHT so that the money spent is being spent efficiently. Someone who believes that TRUE fiscal conservatism might mean taxing those who can afford it until the inequities that DO EXIST are removed enough that we don't need such expensive social welfare.

I just deleted a very long post here. I probably shouldn't have even written the above. This is political. The issue, of course, is politicised, if not strictly political.
The science, the philosophy, well...science can be politicized (evolution, anyone....global warming?) Philosophy? Well, philosophy, morality, what is politics, other than expousing one's philosophy and trying to get as many people who don't understand it to agree with you?
