I'm a big fan of MMA. Anyone else? I'm throwing this open to any aspect of MMA or traditional martial arts. For the record, I've trained in traditional Japanese MA and done a little Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
I have tremendous respect for Boxing.

Yep, I love it.. I actually lived in brazil for a few years and they are crazy about jiu jitsu and judo, but MMA is one of my favorite sports to watch.:rock:

I personally started with judo at 13 followed by Aikido but got bored with the knifes and swords so switched to kickboxing for the rest of my crazy years.
There's some really great fighters out there. Very technical with excellent stand up and ground work.
I've never met him or anything, but Randy seems to be a class act. I wish more fighters represented the sport the way he does. Not to mention: what an inspiration for us old guys! :DQuote:

I think as far as actual fighting goes, MMA schools are the most efficient in teaching it.
If I wanted to learn to fight 'for real' in a short time (couple of years) I'd do MMA instead of ninpo.
I once trained in the muay thai gym where Leon Van Dijk (sparring partner of Bas Rutten) also trained sometimes (the Siam gym in Valkenswaard). Just by looking at him, it became painfully obvious that there is a world of difference between the average fighter and a true warrior. In that time I trained up to 6 times per week, but after looking at him for 2 minutes, I figured that a million to one was probably too generous when calculating my odds. :eek:

I enjoy watching mma for the technical aspects. I myself am a 2nd dan in hapkido so the grappling is espically interesting to me. I do have one beef with mma. Not with the fighters but with the veiwer. Some not all think this is real fighting. It is not. Yes they are fighting but it is structured with rules ref and purse making them prize fighters. They are very good at what they do but it is not a real fight it is a competition. A real fight has no rules and weapons are often involved.
What I'm most impressed with is the increasing level of skill. If you compare the fighters of today with those of say, just five years ago, they have jumped leaps and bounds in skill. That's not to say anything bad about the past fighters - they're the one teaching these younger guys.

I lurk on an MMA forum sometimes. The general concensus is that any of todays top level fighters would win all the early tournaments.
In those days, fighters were much more 1 dimensional. Karateka, TKD, ninjutsu, ... Todays fighters are much more all-rounders. The killer combination of the last years seems to be BJJ + muay thai.
Btw, Rutten was supposed to have fought Kimo Reale for his 1 fight comeback. It was always going to be 1 fight. But 2 days before the fight, Kimo was caught with stanozolol in his blood.
They could have canceled the fight, but found Villareal (warpath) willing to take his place.
Everybody knew that the difference in skills was heavily slanted in favor of Bas.
Villareal got cred for lasting as long as he did, but the outcome was predictable.
I once read an interview where he was asked if he would ever fight again, and the answer was no.
Apparently he has zero cartilege left in his knees. It's bone on bone. So until they find a way to regenerate cartilege, no more fighting for Bas. He could still kick ass though :D
I agree.
Villareal had a heck of a chin in that fight. Bas is excellent. I enjoy when broadcasts fights too.
